Forbidden Love Poem?

Hey :)

I'm looking for a poem about forbidden love. Two people who love each other but aren't allowed to be involved. Regulations keep them apart. But they hope for a day when they finally can be together ...

Does anyone know one? I can't seem to find any good ones.

Thanks a lot!

Lu

What kind of regulations? Officers and enlisted personnel? Laws? Social disapproval? Verstehe nicht.

Are their disqualifications because of height, sexual orientation, handed-ness?

It may be because one of them is an Eskimo, and the parents have given the relationship the cold shoulder.

If you include love poems where the premise is that the liaison is or would be strongly opposed by family, tribe or society, here's one:

'Arabic Love Song'
by Francis Thompson (1859-1907)

The hunched camels of the night
Trouble the bright
And silver waters of the moon.
The maiden of the Morn will soon
Through Heaven stray and sing,
Star gathering.

Now while the dark about our loves is strewn
Light of the dark, blood of my heart, O come!
And night will catch her breath up and be dumb.
Leave thy father, leave thy mother
And thy brother;
Leave the black tents of thy tribe apart!
Am I not thy father and thy brother,
And thy mother?
And thou – what needest with thy tribe’s black tents
Who hast the red pavilion of my heart?

Okay I'm sorry. Forgot to give that info. ;) And sorry to disappoint you, it's not about Eskimos and has nothing to do with Potatoes. ;)

They're officers in the military. One of them is the CO of the other one ... so they're not allwoed to be involved because of fraternization and all this things.

Thanks!

Regulations forbid that a colonel
May fraternize, making infolonel
Demands which connive at
Seducing a private,
In hopes of adventures noctolonel.

I wonder if Luna is still looking for poems of forbidden love.

The song LAYLA takes it's title from the girl's name in an Arabic poem about forbidden love. The Story of Layla and Majnun, by Nizami. It's as long as Romeo and Juliet, but the ending is MORE depressing.

Is that possible? I know a great story by Barjavel "la nuit des temps". Not on forbidden love, but also very depressing.

Yes, it is possible. At the end of ROMEO AND JULIET, the lovers are together (but dead) and the feud is ended.

At the end of LAYLA AND MAJNUN, the lovers are together but he has lost his mind and everyone is miserable.

===============

The play 'TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE (by Shakespeare's contemporary, John Ford) is about a love affair between a brother and sister, and there are some poetic exchanges that might be excerptable. Isabella says at one point that she has been suffering, "Not so much for that I loved, as that I durst not say I loved, nor scarcely think it." (That's quoted from memory - check before you use it.)

My friend Rupali just came down to use the fax machine and I asked her for "poems about forbidden love" and she mentioned Francesca da Rimini in Dante's INFERNO. As I recall, she's in hell for an affair with her brother-in-law.

Well, I couldn't normally be bothered, but since you correctly used the subjunctive mood (though shouting):

In love with a lad who's my cousin,
I'm tempted to offer a dozen
Hot kisses and hugs,
But I fear all the ughs
When the neighborhood tongues are abuzzin'.

(You never heard of condoms? I mean, the danger is in procreation, not recreation!)

Angelina, I can't immediately think of any poems about the issue of cousin relationships, but if you do a Google search for the words: marriage cousins & risks , you'll find a vast number of sites explaining that procreation by first cousins isn't anywhere near as risky as was once believed. For instance:

[tenets.zoroastrianism.com]

I personally know some first cousin couples in Australia who are doing well and have had children with no apparent problems.

Marriage between cousins is tolerated in most parts of the world, and even encouraged in some. The places where it is still socially disapproved or banned by law (including some American states, I'm sorry to say, though only a minority) are mostly backwaters in the enlightenment stakes.

Obviously I don't know how old you and your cousin are, nor whether your feelings are mutual and likely to be enduring. If they are, and if you are old enough to organize your own lives, one solution would be to move to some place where your relationship isn't prohibited.

I know nothing however about the laws and social attitudes in Cameroon, which appears to be where your hotmail address is registered.

Getting back to poetry, if there isn't a poem ready-made for you, what about having a go at writing one yourself?

Howbout...

By Dwight B. Latham
and Moe Jaffe
Many many years ago when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
And soon the two were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.

To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.

My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.

For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter's son.

My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She's my grandmother, too.

If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.

For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa!

A Tale of Forbidden Love

She sat by the window lost in thought
Her mind and heart a battle fought
To wed a stranger twice her age
Her family said was no outrage
Or take such matters into her hand
Elope with her love to a far off land

Her mother, then, came in that day
To impart wisdom on her wedding day
“My dear why must you be so irate,
Learn to accept what is your fate
Culture and tradition will always dictate
Parents know better to choose your mate.”

“Love and passion count for naught
Just as common sense cannot be bought
Time alone will engender love
Respect will be your treasure trove.
Listen well to what you’ve been told
Our honor alone you must uphold.”

Duty and honor must surely dictate
What her heart desired, to abate.
With a broken spirit she bid adieu
To her only love, to start anew;
Knowing then that come what may
A bartered bride she would be that day.

So amidst all the pomp and splendor
She left her home with heart asunder
As her father tried to soothe her pain
He said these final words again,
Your home is with your spouse today.
Our doors are closed if you return to stay.

And so began her new life again
In fear and anger and in pain;
And with time all respect went away
And honor and tradition no longer held sway
For though she fought against her pride
She could not forget she was a bartered bride

In time her passion made her bold
Her only love she vowed to uphold
And so in many a secret rendezvous
A forbidden love now became taboo.
And culture, tradition, honor and pride
Meant little enough to a bartered bride

But alas as all such stories go
The ignorant masses came to know
And amidst the rage and blinding hate
A silent death was a merciful fate
A fitting end is what they all claim
To a forbidden love borne out of shame

Think you not that this tale be old
Even today such things go untold
Is there any pride or honor won
What culture and tradition have undone.
For when compassion there is none to give
Then humanity as such ceases to live.

On a (semi)positive note:

[vmlinux.org]

I seem to remember the formatting being different in the copy I read, but I do not see one similar on the 'net.

On a negative note:

Oh, tell me, tell me what could this be,
Could this be love that enthralls me
Not just any emotion
But confidence, affection, and devotion
Miles apart days away
But this love chiseled in my heart will stay
Wanting to grasp you close to me
But knowing I cant oh why does this be
Caged, reaching out for you
So close and knowing you want this too
Illusions of love you and me
But knowing I have to hide this, bites like a bee
Yet the one thing that keeps us together
Destroy us and will never untether
Yet in the reserve of our alone
You hold me dear and no one is touv known
Infatuation in every stroke and every kiss
When we are apart I fantasize of this
This love is too herculean to waste
So fare away yet close enough to taste
Longing to be with you all the time
Hungry for your heart to be one with mine
Take this hand and escort me to your ocean
Kiss me and fill me with your fragrant potion
One to make me winded make me week
That one takes all there life to seek
And at this age I have rescued love
You were sent from a glorified spirit above
Every time I glance at your eyes so pure and blue
I lose my senses and want to be retained by you
Craving to be in your arms, be held so tight
Yearning praying begging with all my might
But I know this in no way will be
You and me at once for all to see
This, this, what it could be
For this is forbiddenlove that captivates me.
