Format definitely sounds like a ballad, but net searches turned up nothing when I looked around.

When you took me young and lusty
From the growling russian bear,
Loud you vowed upon the mountain
I would have the (eagles'/eagle's) care ...

Perhaps a Usenet post to alt.culture.alaska might produce results?
