I went to a house that was not a house.
I opened a door that was not a door.
And what I saw, I saw.

anyone know where this fragment comes from?

Nothing appears on the internet Marg. How did you come by this? If you read it somewhere, do you have the text? It is very difficult to trace certain newer works because they either have not been published, or they have not been copied to the world wide web.

My best advice for this would be to go to your source and begin your search there. It's kinky enough to be a song lyric, but that's just a guess on my part.

not the following ?

by Hughes Mearns (1875 - 1965)

As I was walking up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today.
I wish, I wish he'd stay away.

Lines written for The Psycho-ed, an amateur play, in Philadelphia, 1910 (set to music in 1939 as 'The Little Man Who Wasn't There')

It comes from the book "Something from the Nightside" by Simon R. Green.

Wow! That appears to be accurate. Amazon has a Search Inside The Book feature, that shows this quote from the Front Matter, whatever that is.

[tinyurl.com]

It won't let me link the results of the search, but you can find it: Result # 22 (last page) from the Search "that was not a house".

Is it quoted there from something else? Dunno.
