Emily Dickinson...

I'm looking for an Emily Dickinson poem that I loved as a child. I remember it had something to do with playing a small part in brightening some else's day. Like, she knew she couldn't do much but she would do what she could. Ideas?

Thanks!

this one ?
.
If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking
Emily Dickinson.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

Hi, one Janurary morning, just before my Moma passed away, she was writing a poem to reflect her life..... She wrote

If I shouldn't be alive when the robins come,
Give the one in the Red Cravat,
A memorial Crumb.

If I couldn't thank you,
Being just asleep,
you will know I'm trying
with my granite lip.

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not have lived in vain.
If I can ease one life from aching,
or cool one pain,
or help a fainting robin, unto it's nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

Gosh, I didn't realize this was written by Emily, I thought my Moma had writen it. Of course, when I got home she had already passed and I found the scrap of paper on the kitchen table, where she had left it that morning, before going in the ambulance. I put it in my family scrapbook as written by my Moma. Guess I will need to make a notation in my book, it being some things she was just remembering, and thought to jot them down for me. gg

Tanya, Now this a real puzzel, I can only find the last two verses of this poem called 'Life', by Emily. I wonder if my Moma added the first two verses on that dark, cold day in Janurary, just before she passed away? Gosh! I may never know. I am still researching it. gg

Here is the other one (Emily's #182):

If I shouldn't be alive
When the Robins come,
Give the one in Red Cravat,
A Memorial crumb.

If I couldn't thank you,
Being fast asleep,
You will know I'm trying
Why my Granite lip!

Thank's Hugh, Moma read and wrote poety everyday of her life, and I am so glad that in her last hours, she had these memories and that her mind was clear enough to remember and muse over some of the wonderful verse that she had known in her life. Thank you for finding these for me. gg
