Hey, this is really dissapointing. I thought someone here could help. You all seem sort of clique-ish. I'm trying to do a nice thing here, but it got buried and no replies....Thanks.
I am trying to find the author and complete poem for my 86 year old aunt, her mother (my grandmother) used to recite it to her but she can't remember the whole thing. This is what she could remember, goes like this:
I saw a new moon yester eve
Low hanging in the sky
T'was pale and wan
And gave no light
And yet I laughed
To see the sight
And laughing wondered why
T'was just because.......?
followed by 2 more lines she can't remember and then:
I made a wish
And gave it tongue
And laughed and thought of you
Help! Thank you!

I'm just writing because I'm sorry you've had no answers. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has looked for your lovely poem on google. The more one uses the internet the more one discovers its boundaries, there are so many things that are not on it. Amongst which seem to be this poem. When I saw the heading I thought it was going to be "I saw the new moon late yestreen Wi' the auld moon in her arm;...". From the ballad Sir Patrick Spens. But it is entirely different. Anyway, good luck with your search and I'm sure you'll find the errant lines in the end.
Super, the poem is either by an amateur poet, that is unpublished, or it is published and is under copyright. Copyrighted poems are often not on the internet. The best advice one can give in that case is to go to the source. Where did you find the poem? Go there and see if credit is given to the author. If it was merely passed to you by a friend ask them if they know the source.
Les
That may be difficult , as the source is given as the mother of an 86year old aunt.
Sorry Linda, I missed that. But, if poems which are lightly published, or published only in certain textbooks, are lost. It is very difficult to trace them, especially if the author has died.
Les
I agree it is difficult to find works used in school text books. I still haven't found "Black Takes White" yet and the text book is long since out of print.

I, for one, and like a lot of people probably, did try hard to find it,
all I could : newspaper archive, my own books, etc, with no result.
Clique-ish ?
Anyway, I thought someone would know it, so I found it useless to
post something like "no luck, sorry". So it was not "buried".
I am still trying to find it, and I am sorry if you are disappointed.
But how do you think I/WE feel when we are unable to help someone
to find a long lost poem ?
Believe me, I feel pretty sorry, almost sad.
I am not the site owner - just a poetry lover.
But I felt the need to tell you how I feel.
All the best,

Yep, you're right, poor choice of words on my part. I'm usually able to find what I need on the internet and this was pretty frustrating. I was glad to find this site but seemed to get no response or interest for quite awhile so I finally stopped trying here (you can tell by the date of this response). Anyway, thanks for trying and I'll just tell my aunt that I can't find it. It's entirely possible my grandmother could have written it herself, since she left many poems and stories behind when she died.
Guess I can't find stuff 100% of the time, that's just the law of averages. Thanks for writing and for caring.
Lisa
Paul,
Thanks for writing. I let it go for awhile due to lack of response, but am happy to find some interest now (several months later). I haven't found the author or missing lines, but it's still a nice poem.
Isn't it interesting how my elderly aunt remembers something my grandmother quoted so many years ago? That's one reason I love poetry and also remember some I read and some my mom told me...
You're right about the internet being full of holes sometimes. I'm usually pretty thorough but this one has slipped into a(n) authorless hole. I (as well as my aunt) do appreciate you and others looking!
I will continue to look and thanks for your kind words.
Lisa
