hi
I've been looking for this poem - at least i've been told it is a poem, it apparently mentions a village is China where my grandfather was born, any help would be appreciated
thankyou
Vicki
are you sure it is a poem ?
I know of a movie and a song ...
the place shown in the movie is Repulse Bay ( south China sea)
In the song, and presumably the movie too, I believe it's 'splendoured', not 'splendid'.
My Mom used to sing "love is a very splendid thing", but then again, she thought John Lennon was part of the Lennon Brothers
thx for ur replys, I found the movie, I think thats what I'm looking for, ur Mum sounds nice, and my mum can b slightly out of touch too,
The phrase "the many-splendoured thing" originally came from the English poet Francis Thompson's The Hound of Heaven.

I don't see it in this copy - perhaps only a fragment?:

Perhaps In No Strange Land, by the same author?
The kingdom of God is within you
O world invisible, we view thee,
O world intangible, we touch thee,
O world unknowable, we know thee,
Inapprehensible, we clutch thee!
Does the fish soar to find the ocean,
The eagle plunge to find the air--
That we ask of the stars in motion
If they have rumor of thee there?
Not where the wheeling systems darken,
And our benumbed conceiving soars!--
The drift of pinions, would we hearken,
Beats at our own clay-shuttered doors.
The angels keep their ancient places--
Turn but a stone and start a wing!
'Tis ye, 'tis your estrangèd faces,
That miss the many-splendored thing.
But (when so sad thou canst not sadder)
Cry--and upon thy so sore loss
Shall shine the traffic of Jacob's ladder
Pitched betwixt Heaven and Charing Cross.
Yea, in the night, my Soul, my daughter,
Cry--clinging to Heaven by the hems;
And lo, Christ walking on the water,
Not of Genesareth, but Thames!
Splendoured or splendored according to your taste.
Love Is A Many Splendoured Thing Lyrics
Artist: The Four Aces (Buy The Four Aces CDs)
Love is a many splendored thing
It's the April rose that only grows in the early spring
Love is nature's way of giving a reason to be living
The golden crown that makes a man a king
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist two lovers kissed and the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing
Yes, true love's a many splendored thing
Once on a high and windy hill
In the morning mist two lovers kissed and the world stood still
Then your fingers touched my silent heart and taught it how to sing
Yes, true love's a many splendored thing
You're right sorry: my book is "The Hound of Heaven but it's got other poems too which I forget. Amended

Love is a many splendored thing
it is most likely the dedication that Han Suyin wrote to her husband
the title of the book: A Many Splendored Thing
but i think it has also been published as
Love is a many splendored thing and it was the background I believe for the song.
Till Morning Comes
Rain in my drink (cup) may be the third title

outstanding writer
Han Suyin wrote "Love is a many splendoured thing" about a love affair she had with a european reporter in 1949/50 in Hong Kong. In the book, the reporter quotes the line. The reporter died before they married.
Its a wonderful book although sad. For those interested in Asia especially Hong Kong just after WW II, its a great read

Love Is A Many Splendored Thing; Words & Music by Paul F. Webster & Sammy Fain; Recorded by The Four Aces, 1955 (#1 for 6 weeks, on charts for 20). The song was the title song of the film.
"Occasionally, however, the title song concept would come up trumps, never more so than in 1956's Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster produced a brilliantly romantic ditty that has outlived the spectacular Cinemascope film for which it was written."
LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING; Released: August 10, 2021 (20th Century Fox) Cast: Jennifer Jones (as Han Suyin), William Holden, Torin Thatcher, Isobel Elsom, Murray Matheson, Virginia Gregg.
"Based on the memoirs of Han Suyin, this is the story of an Eurasian doctor's tragic love affair with an American correspondent. Although the love story is the central theme, the film also touches on the subjects of the Korean War, communism and race relations.
Jennifer Jones is radiantly beautiful in this film. Her makeup (by Ben Nye) was incredible and gave her the Oriental look that was perfect for her character. Her dresses were also lovely and the film won an Academy Award for Costume Design. The film received two more Academy Awards for Best Song (it was a huge hit, written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis) and Best Score."
actully my grandmother wrote it when she was a teenager. she sent it off to the record companies because they were buying poems to turn in to songs back in the 50's. a couple of songwriter's picked it up and because of lose copywrite law's they claimed credit for it. i still have the original notebook she wrote it in. her name was christine collins. she passed away about a year ago in may. she was an accomplished author.
I am searching for the rest of the words to this by i was told as a child this is by Lord Byron
Love is a many splendored thing
as great unto a captian as a king
and greater still for kings have cares that rest apon a crown
but it is love that makes the world go round their is more but it has been well over 25 years since i tried to memorize this and i have forgotten the rest.
