Hi, my mother in law (now deceased) used to say a poem with this phrase " if its and ands were pots and pans there would be no work for tinkers" in it. Does anyone know what the poem was called ?
thanks,
Karen.
Scottish proverb:
"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride
If turnips were swords, i'd wear one by my side
If ifs and ands were pots and pans,
there'd be no need for tinkers' hands"
Also:
If "ifs" and "ands" were pots and pans, there'd be no work for tinkers' hands. - Charles Kingsley (1819-1875)
I learned as a child:
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts
We'd all have a merry Christmas.
