funeral service poem - if love alone could save him

Greetings.

My thanks to anyone who can identify the poem wherein lies the phrase 'if love alone could save him he never would have died', or something very similar to that.

Best regards,
Trish

a couple with that line..................

God saw you getting tired
A cure was not to be,
So He put His arms around you, and whispered, "Come To Me."
With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,we could not make you stay.
Many times we thought of you, many times we've cried,
If love alone could save you, you never would have died.
A golden heart stopped beating, your tender hands at rest,
God took you home to prove to us He only takes the best.
..............
You never said I'm leaving

You never said I'm leaving,
you never said goodbye,
you were gone before I knew it,
and only god knew why.

A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried,
if love alone could save you,
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
in death I love you still,
in my heart you hold a place,
that no one could ever fill.

It broke my heart to lose you,
but you didn't go alone,
for a part of me went with you,
the day god took you home.

Years ago I went to one of the big English country houses and there was an animal cemetery there with an inscription to a dog which went something like 'when he got old, the nicer bits of his character died first, and he was grumpy and fed up, but we still loved him, despite himself and miss him a lot.' That comforted me a great deal, because my father had recently died, several years after Mum, and since her death he'd been very difficult and quite unpleasant and quarrelsome - so I was pretty mixed up about how I felt. The inscription made a sort of sense of it all , which made me feel better. Then, a few years later I came across 'You never said I'm leaving' which made it all even clearer and said it much better than I could. So - like ces and kylsamae, I cried - still do!

Thanks for that lovely story about the dog epitaph, Marian. I'm sure a lot of people can relate to it at a human level. It's also a memorable reflection of a dog being kindly treated as a family member: one of the many civilised character traits the English have led the world at.

I found this. I hope it will help you. It's got that line in it and its beautiful.

You never said I'm leaving.

You never said Goodbye.

You were gone before we knew it, and and God knows only why.

A million times we needed you, a million times we've cried.

If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died.

In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still.

In our hearts you hold a special place no one can ever fill.

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone.

For a part of us went with you the day God called you home.

This is so beautiful and I cry as I read it, because It's what I tell my dad in my heart every day in the past 12 years he's been gone. We love and miss you so very much dad. You were ever so special.

I inadvertantly came across one stanza of the poem a couple of years ago. I was so moved by the line "If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died that I wrote a song using it. You may check it out at www.amilliontimes.com
