Super - Realism

I recently met with an unfamiliar term, "Super - Realism", I would like to know more about "Super - Realist" poets, if there actually are any and more information regarding the "Super - Realists" as a movement.

When doing a google search, most of what I found pertained to visual art, and an article or two about something pertaining to physics (over my head). I hope someone else can give you some info on the poetry...I am interested to know myslef.

su•per•re•al•ism Listen: [ s p r-r -l z m ]
n.

An artistic and literary movement characterized by extreme realism.

Superrealism (Hyperrealism)

Art of extreme verisimilitude, associated with the USA in the 1970s but to a lesser extent popular also
in Western Europe. In painting it is usually, though not always, based on the direct copying of photographs
(Photo Realism); in sculpture it makes much use of direct casts from the human figure.
Also called Hyper Realism.

Talia, thanks....I was familiar with the painting and sculpture aspects, especially after having the poop scared out of me by a Dwayne Hanson (sp?) sculpture...and can't for the life of me figure out how this could apply to poetry.

Unless, of course, it refers to Peter's quote of "Is that a real poem, or did you just make it up?"

Johnny,

I don't think that is what Creeley had in mind when he named his book of essays "Is that a real poem, or did you just make it up?"--but rather the tendency of some critics to scorn sponteous, 'natural' poetry.

Maybe it has to do with found poetry, although I've never heard it applied to Dadaist work [which is the source of much 'found poetry']'.--I think the kind of thing you posts on phrases you'd heard.

Peter, a lot of Dada was taking "whatever" and presenting it as art, as opposed to looking for specific gems within ordinary speech.

Perhaps the Phil Rizzuto and Donald Rumsfeld poetry books are more in line with this idea

It's the only way I can see that poetry could have a similar impact as the paintings and sculptures do

Thank you Talia, Johnny and Peter your responses are appreciated.

I am going with the understanding that Super-Realism amounts to social observation which shows complete detail in a bizarre and surreal light.

For example the poetry of PAUL DURCAN which has been said to "bring out the madness of what everyone takes for normal".

Afro man, is this something you want for a poetry project? This is a poetry site, not an art site.

You might find something here:

but I doubt whether the concept of super realism means much for poetry. It sounds like a pretentious new label dreamed up by some critic desperate to claim significance for work that most people wouldn't regard as poetry (or art). For a start, what's the difference between 'realism' and 'super realism'? Is that like the supposed difference between 'true' and 'very true'?

Is it a confusion with surrealism, which involves going beyond what is real?
