let's start with Migrant hostel:

MIGRANT HOSTEL - by Peter Skryznecki

no one kept count
of all the comings and goings-
arrivals of newcomers
in busloads from the station,
sudden departures from adjoining blocks
that left us wondering
who would be coming next.

nationalities sought
each other out instinctively -
like a homing pigeon
circling to get its bearings;
years and place-names
recognised by accents,
partitioned off at night
by memories of hunger and hate.

for over two years
we lived like birds of passage -
always sensing a change
in the weather:
unaware of the season
whose tracks we would follow.

a barrier at the main gate
sealed off the highway
from our doorstep -
as it rose and fell like a finger
pointed in reprimand or shame;
and daily we passed
underneath or alongside it -
needing its sanction
to pass in and out of lives
that had only begun
or were dying.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, fc, but what I see is this.

The immigrants are unwanted- no one cares who comes or goes. They're sticking together with others from their country- they're not trying to reach out. The 'barrier' of the last stanza is one set by the immigrants themselves. They're not locked in their migrant hostel, but see themselves as being so.

Okay, this is an analysis of the poetic devices and techniques used in this poem - these are some things that we have analysed at school. This is also a text often used in Australian NSW HSC course.

"No one kept count
Of all the comings and goings-"
-- business like, uncaring, impersonal. It's described like a prison camp.

"Arrivals of the newcomers
In busloads from the station,"
-- they come in multitudes, it happened to lots of other people, not just them.

"That left us wondering"
-- "us" is personalised

"Like a homing pigeon
Circling to get its bearings"
-- simile shows the lostness and uncertainty of them. They are homeless

"For over two years we lived like birds of passage"
Alliter: negative, emphasis tone, bird image used again.

"Always sensing a change in the weather"
-- The weather is a metaphor for the all-powerful, and random, impersonal bureacrocy that is controlling them.

"A barrier at the main gate"
-- boom gate (would be ex-military camp)

"Sealed off the hihway"
-- 'highway' symbolises freedom, new life, etc. But they are unable to reach it.

There are many prison images mentioned throughout the poem, and mention of the bureacracy.

"Or were dying"
-- the last line, negative word to end on, emphasises the negative tone of the poem.

In the poem, their Polish lives are dying and their Australian lives are beginning.
-----

just a question for you. What do You think the highway symbolizes?

And what don't you understand?

Desi, do these students know where to find a 'flat view' button? I can't find it in the resurrected e-Mule. Not that that's a problem, because I seem to have flat view anyway.

Ah, I see. You're right. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Ok, if you go to My control center (just above the area where you can write) - forum settings on the left, and then "Thread Override - Read:" select flat view.

(or you can just read all the links above yours)

I don't have "Thread Override - Read:"

Maybe that's just for the Moderators.
