Hey guys. I am currently a student and I am majoring in Accounting. I have never been very good at English and I was hoping some of you could be kind enough to help me out. My assignment is as follows:
Compare and contrast the voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, and symbolism for "How Do I Love Thee?" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" by William Shakespeare. If anyone can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

"How Do I Love Thee?" by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

"My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" by William Shakespeare

Any help at all would leave me greatly in debt. Thanks a lot for your time and kindness.

(If any help is needed in Financial Accounting, Calc I & II, Micro & Macro Economics or General Business please contact me. I will be glad to help. :] )

you have my greatest sympathy, i'm not the gratest fan of Shakespeare's sonnets, but a few key pointers on my mistress' eyes...

1. it is a parody of traditional italian sonnet
2. its all about shakespeare ahving a go at other poets for using hyperbole when describing beauty
3. contrasting words rhyme (sun and dun)
4. makes shakespeare's account of the dark lady (the mistress) seem truthful and honest and romantic
5. he is criticsing blazon poets such as Sir Philip Sidney (1554 - 1586)

now for How do i love thee...

1. repetition of 'love' makes this poem either very romantic or very desparate
2. imagery is everyday - more realistic love
3. image of the sun is used in both sonnets but in different ways, here it is to show the depth of the love
4. different rhyme schemes and rhythms emphasise different parts of the sonnets

hope this is vaguely useful

any more questions then come straight back to the site!!!

these sonnets have both either been or are on various GCSE, AS and A2 syllabuses so there are bound to be people out there who know what they are talking about

Good luck with your essay

>1. it is a parody of traditional italian sonnet

Perhaps instead a parody of Bartholomew Griiffin's?

>3. contrasting words rhyme (sun and dun)

The other rhymes do not fit this pattern, however. Red/head, sound/ground, etc.

>5. he is criticsing blazon poets such as Sir Philip Sidney

Wot's a 'blazon poet'?
