I think thats about 'Inner Journeys' i need imaginative..thanx anyway
Ace this is from that thread:
To Imagination
by Emily Jane Brontė
When weary with the long day's care,
And earthly change from pain to pain,
And lost and ready to despair,
Thy kind voice calls me back again:
Oh, my true friend! I am not lone,
While thou canst speak with such a tone!
So hopeless is the world without;
The world within I doubly prize;
Thy world, where guile, and hate, and doubt,
And cold suspicion never rise;
Where thou, and I, and Liberty,
Have undisputed sovereignty.
What matters it, that, all around,
Danger, and guilt, and darkness lie,
If but within our bosom's bound
We hold a bright, untroubled sky,
Warm with ten thousand mingled rays
Of suns that know no winter days?
Reason, indeed, may oft complain
For Nature's sad reality,
And tell the suffering heart, how vain
Its cherished dreams must always be;
And Truth may rudely trample down
The flowers of Fancy, newly-blown:
But, thou art ever there, to bring
The hovering vision back, and breathe
New glories o'er the blighted spring,
And call a lovelier Life from Death,
And whisper, with a voice divine,
Of real worlds, as bright as thine.
I trust not to thy phantom bliss,
Yet, still, in evening's quiet hour,
With never-failing thankfulness,
I welcome thee, Benignant Power;
Sure solacer of human cares,
And sweeter hope, when hope despairs!
Les
Ace, if you want help on this topic, please explain what you mean by an 'imaginative journey'. It's not a recognized poetic category.
Did you mean to say it can or it can't be anything by Frost or Coleridge?
Ummm like a jouney that someone takes in their head....For example, if someone is dreaming......
Try Journey of the Magi by T.S Eliot
I'v been looking for texts based on imaginative journeys too. For english that is. The poem recommendation by T.S. Eliot is perfect!
Thanx,
Ash
journey poems
Jenni, is that a bumper sticker, or what?
i need to find related texts from different contexts such as workplace, personal, social, historical or cultural. Poems, song lyrics, cartoons are some text types. I have already chosen "A very long engagement" the movie as a text is it relevant enough?
They must also be texts which i can talk about, because some texts are very useless to analyse as they do not contain enough relevancy and sufficent information.
thanyou for your time and effort
Mon, most - if not all - of the regular contributors to Emule have not done HSC in NSW, so if you want help, I suggest you explain better what you are asking for.
First, if whatever you are asking for is all meant to be in the imaginative journey category, what do YOU mean by an 'imaginative journey' (as distinct from any other kind of journey)?
Related to what? What do you mean by texts being 'related'?
<"A very long engagement" the movie as a text is it relevant enough?
I haven't seen it. You chose it. So tell us why you thought it relevant.
Relevant to what?
Information about what? How do you judge whether the information is sufficient?
Ian
Hi !! im looking for imaginative poems as well but it cant be 'Journey of the Magi' or from Coleridge. Its for an assignment. If you could please me some recommendations that would be agreat help.
Nina, there are tens of thousands of 'imaginative' poems. Can you be more specific as to what you are looking for, and the nature of your assignment?
I suggest you first click on 'Flat View', and read the posts above yours in this thread.
I feel your pain nina. A lot of material that's considered an 'imaginative journey' and an 'inner journey' tend to overlap. It's a real pain in the ass.
someone plz tell me an imiaginative poem for hsc
imaginative poems look at William Wordsworth, T.S Elliot, some of Dickinson, there are so many imaginative journey poems around, thats what poetry was about in the Romantic movement, just find one you like and can understand and analyse. Also, you can look at novels, or movies.. Alice in Wonderland is great or childrens books and elaborate images...
Hi, could you please help me find a poem/lyrics that involves the persona/poet/writer going on an imaginative journey. They could be dreaming or speculating or thinking/imagining. i have read the posts in this thread and looked at the poem " the journey of the magi" but i dont understand what the 'magi' is or if the persona is going in an imaginative journey, even after doing some background research.
thanks
The Ghost<br />
---Henry Lawson
Down the street as I was drifting with the city's human tide,
Came a ghost, and for a moment walked in silence by my side --
Now my heart was hard and bitter, and a bitter spirit he,
So I felt no great aversion to his ghostly company.
Said the Shade: At finer feelings let your lip in scorn be curled,<br />
Self and Pelf', my friend, has ever been the motto for the world.'
And he said: If you'd be happy, you must clip your fancy's wings,<br />
Stretch your conscience at the edges to the size of earthly things;<br />
Never fight another's battle, for a friend can never know<br />
When he'll gladly fly for succour to the bosom of the foe.<br />
At the power of truth and friendship let your lip in scorn be curled --<br />
Self and Pelf', my friend, remember, is the motto of the world.
Where Society is mighty, always truckle to her rule;<br />
Never send an
i' undotted to the teacher of a school;
Only fight a wrong or falsehood when the crowd is at your back,
And, till Charity repay you, shut the purse, and let her pack;
At the fools who would do other let your lip in scorn be curled,
Self and Pelf', my friend, remember, that's the motto of the world.<br />
<br />
Ne'er assail the shaky ladders Fame has from her niches hung,
Lest unfriendly heels above you grind your fingers from the rung;
Or the fools who idle under, envious of your fair renown,
Heedless of the pain you suffer, do their worst to shake you down.
At the praise of men, or censure, let your lip in scorn be curled,
Self and Pelf', my friend, remember, is the motto of the world.<br />
<br />
Flowing founts of inspiration leave their sources parched and dry,
Scalding tears of indignation sear the hearts that beat too high;
Chilly waters thrown upon it drown the fire that's in the bard;
And the banter of the critic hurts his heart till it grows hard.
At the fame your muse may offer let your lip in scorn be curled,
Self and Pelf', my friend, remember, that's the motto of the world.<br />
<br />
Shun the fields of love, where lightly, to a low and mocking tune,
Strong and useful lives are ruined, and the broken hearts are strewn.
Not a farthing is the value of the honest love you hold;
Call it lust, and make it serve you! Set your heart on nought but gold.
At the bliss of purer passions let your lip in scorn be curled --
Self and Pelf', my friend, shall ever be the motto of the world.'<br />
<br />
Then he ceased and looked intently in my face, and nearer drew;<br />
But a sudden deep repugnance to his presence thrilled me through;<br />
Then I saw his face was cruel, by the look that o'er it stole,<br />
Then I felt his breath was poison, by the shuddering of my soul,<br />
Then I guessed his purpose evil, by his lip in sneering curled,<br />
And I knew he slandered mankind, by my knowledge of the world.<br />
<br />
But he vanished as a purer brighter presence gained my side --<br />
Heed him not! there's truth and friendship
in this wondrous world,' she cried,
And of those who cleave to virtue in their climbing for renown,
Only they who faint or falter from the height are shaken down.
At a cynic's baneful teaching let your lip in scorn be curled!
`Brotherhood and Love and Honour!' is the motto for the world.'

Magi are the wise men (or kings) in the Christmas story. You can take the poem as a physical journey, they went to Bethlehem to see the baby or a journey of developement from rich king to human being.
Thanks, i understand that now except i need a poem that involves the persona/poet/writer going on an imaginative journey. They could be dreaming or speculating or thinking/imagining. So does that mean that i cant relate "the journey of the magi" to imaginative journeys.
Sally, click on "flat view" at the bottom of this post and look at all the messages above yours.

i just found a poem called "to imagination" by emily bronte, is that a good one that deals with an imaginative journey?
thanks
i understand how the poem to imagination" by emily bronte relates to the imagination but i cant understand how it relates to a journey??????
Maybe it doesn't. Still, if the voice can bring one back again, there must have been a journey to return from?

Hi
A good poem to try would be 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe.
Jo
i chose a leunig cartoon and it talks about imaginative journeys but how can i compare it to "This lime tree bower my prison" by coleridge? the launig cartoon is as follows:
go to this website and click on the november cartoon/image.
[www.e-t-shirts.com] />
thanks
Try this- analyze each separately. How is this cartoon an imaginative journey? How is the Coleridge an imaginative journey. Now see what, if any simalarities exist. Do you think that the authors (or narrators) would appreciate the other's work?

Sonnet L
by William Shakespeare
How heavy do I journey on the way,
When what I seek, my weary travel's end,
Doth teach that ease and that repose to say
'Thus far the miles are measured from thy friend!'
The beast that bears me, tired with my woe,
Plods dully on, to bear that weight in me,
As if by some instinct the wretch did know
His rider loved not speed, being made from thee:
The bloody spur cannot provoke him on
That sometimes anger thrusts into his hide;
Which heavily he answers with a groan,
More sharp to me than spurring to his side;
For that same groan doth put this in my mind;
My grief lies onward and my joy behind.
the beast the imagination that cannot be controlled
plz help me.
Tania, here's a link which may help you with that.

Here's another imaginative journey you may wish to consider:
The Mystic Blue
---D.H. Lawrence
Out of the darkness, fretted sometimes in its sleeping,
Jets of sparks in fountains of blue come leaping
To sight, revealing a secret, numberless secrets keeping.
Sometimes the darkness trapped within a wheel
Runs into speed like a dream, the blue of the steel
Showing the rocking darkness now a-reel.
And out of the invisible, streams of bright blue drops
Rain from the showery heavens, and bright blue crops
Surge from the under-dark to their ladder-tops.
And all the manifold blue and joyous eyes,
The rainbow arching over in the skies,
New sparks of wonder opening in surprise.
All these pure things come foam and spray of the sea
Of Darkness abundant, which shaken mysteriously,
Breaks into dazzle of living, as dolphins that leap from the sea
Of midnight shake it to fire, so the secret of death we see.

please help
i need sum kind of related material
Here we go again! (I suppose that reaction implies a journey of some kind to somewhere, but I don't know what or to where).
Insane, if you want help from this site, you have to be prepared to do some work yourself.
First, read all the posts in this thread that were before yours, including the responses. You'll see that some of the responses consisted of questions to the students who were wanting help, asking them to explain more clearly what they wanted. From those exchanges you should realize that there's a similar need for you to explain your post more clearly. Let me apply some of the questions to you.
Do you know what a 'journey' is? Assuming you do, what do you mean by an 'imaginative' journey, as distinct from any other kind of journey? Can you give some examples?
Next, for any of those examples, what kinds of material would you regard as 'related' to the example? How closely or completely does it have to be related, for it to be suitable for what you want?
If you can make your meaning clear on those points, even though this site is primarily about poetry and you say you don't want a poem, we might be able to suggest something you can use.

Imaginative journeys? Anything by Jules Verne, the movie "Back to the Future". There are dozens, ask your parents.
Les
Great link, Les.
On a quick perusal, I couldn't find e-Mule Homework Assistance listed anywhere (just the Classical Poets archive), but the site certainly comforts with the message that we are not alone in this universe!
Ian, a sidenote: The parents in Australia must have been very active in the past year, many of the sites listed on Google under "australian homework" were not available last year.

can imagine, if the teachers keep on coming up with these nice assignments, which make the parents look ignorant in the eyes of the children as they cannot answer one of them ;-)
hey guys, i just started imaginative journeys at school, and there are some great links and suggestions for texts here. I'd already considered a few, for example the film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the Alice in Wonderland books, but there are plenty of other options for me to look at now. keep up the great work, catchy'all later
lyss
hey guys....i'm doin imaginative journeys (journey of the mind) at school for my area of study and my core text is 'the tempest'....i was just wandering if u would have any ideas on wat sum good related material (texts with similar ideas like the tempest) would be?? i've choosen alice in wonderland- the picture book but would u recommend anything else?
thanks
Selhi, there are a couple of movies you might want to compare: One is "Journey to the Center of the Earth" based on Jules Verne's novel and the other is "Back to the Future". Both have fantasy as their basis.
Les
hey
does anyone know of any material/texts i could use other than a poem on imaginative journey (journey can awaken a world of possibilities)
thanks
For all those who have been wondering what an Imaginative journey is and what the NSW Board of Studies says it is...
WHAT ARE IMAGINATIVE JOURNEYS?....
Imaginative journeys are journeys which take us into worlds of imagination, speculation and inspiration... (syllabus)
.... WHAT CONSTITUES A TEXT ON IMAGINATIVE JOURNEYS?....
*Any text that illustrates the power that the imagination has to take the responder beyond reality.
*Any text that engages the responder's imagination so that they are able to vicariously experience the journey
*Any text that is purely a work of the imagination and transports the responder into a world beyond their own.
thanks fousand,you have been a great help.

Good link! So ... what's the difference betwixt an Inner Journey and an Imaginative one?
Inner Journeys are The Fantastic Voyage- if it doesn't involve an extremely tiny submarine, it's imaginative.
pam
Hey I've been looking for poems on an imaginative journey aswell. Everyone Keeps suggesting the Journey of the Magi by T.S Elliot but thats more of a physical and inner journey than an imgainative one has any one got any good poems? Thanks Loz
How about Edward Lear's "The Jumblies" [www.poetry-online.org] />
Going to sea in a sieve is pretty imaginative.
Thanx Linda Ill have a look at that one!
