A couple of points to consider.
1. Assuming you are allowed to choose topics of your own. Choose things to write about which are very familiar to you. Possible topics might include your boyfriend, best friend, school, hometown, anything that you know well enough and could talk about for hours. The idea here is that if you could talk about it, you should be able to WRITE about it.
2. Brainstorm on paper before you begin to write. Write a rough draft, outline, or word map of the subject before beginning to write the actual poem. That way you will have a pretty good idea of what are the most important things you want to say about the subject. Your task then becomes arranging your ideas in the most effective order.
Having said this, there is no one magic formula to teach writing. The writing process, despite which genre/style of literature you choose, consists of several steps which you've probably covered in your class.
Some decisions you need to make, which are exlusive to poetry, include: Whether or not to make the poem rhyme, or whether it should have meter?
What kind of language should you use? Which poetic devices, such as, metaphors and similies, might be included?
What length a poem should be is always a key concern for beginners. A guideline here is that a poem should be long enough to say everything it needs to say in the shortest space possible.
I hope these suggestions help you get started. Good luck with your project and let us know how it goes.
