DeForrest W.

Where are the notes?
played?
in the chord
in the key
on the board
in the head
looking ahead
looking back
on what’s been?
at the end of a thousand
mile journey –
on a bench
in the park
to a friend
to yourself
to the endless
stream of strangers
in the afternoon sun?

I recall those miles on Hwy 1 in late August of 1972.

There were but a few stops along the way for a wayfaring soul.
Via thumb and suggestion I trudged east from Vancouver to Edmonton.
Little did I know of the kindness or hospitality,
let alone the beauty of the countryside which lay before me.

Looking back, I can't believe how trusting I was nor how hospitable
they were, who each took me a few miles at a time along my way.
From Kamloops to Banff then Jasper to Wildwood we drove east
through natural wonders only the truly blessed would ever know.

I have traveled many miles since then, but the beauty of the western
provinces and the kindness of the people who inhabited them four decades ago,
will never be forgotten by this lone hitchhiker.
May every globe trekker enjoy the beauty of the northern Rockies.

Les

May every globe trekker enjoy the beauty .... We had a most similar experience of the States from New Hampshire to Arizona...to California...to Michigan through Canada to New York when we got married. People are truly amazing in their generosity and god sense.

btw, Les, John C [johnnyboy] and Kathy and I had dinner and conversation last night here in San Francisco. My, what a treat to meet the 'real thing.' I hope someday you and I will trek to see each other...it was a rare treasure to meet someone I have known for ten years before meeting him.

Shalom Salaam,

Peter
