tomorrow is not wednesday… today is./ tomorrow is thursday

my waking dream ended:
investigative abilities depend upon:
know what you are looking for.

not just an open mind,
but a mind open to what it can find there
in the field of perception.

why put an end to the thought
with a period
as if the sentence closed off enquiry

everything is contiguous to something
touches on what it is next to
forming an associative path
leading away or on a way to
something else
until it seems like
no connection can be found between where you were
to where you are

or someone else’s song
can interrupt
the one you are making

thought can end in memory
can be ended by memory

or by hitting the wrong
note
disharmony not fitting
what we intended
or following some other path

lost and confused

but anne berthoff found thought
in creative confusion and the poet I got to know found
her book
the worst book on the methodology of composition
he had ever seen
jarring my path
like a wire struck by a baseball
outside wrigley’s field
where I have never been

I am where I have never been
even at home

slept from six thirty until nine this morning
and woke to revelry
this revelry beginning:
investigative abilities depend upon:
know what you are looking for.

I decided to
not just let it go at that
to follow the thread
into the arachnid’s cave.

sometimes a web
seeming to lead
to a center
leads to its edge
and we step off
onto the plane
of the table by the sea
or
by a candle in the forest

a place I have been
twice as often as I remember
and I remember
when I wake
before
I start
another thread

so I make up my past
from what remains

you can’t get there from here
or some other title
gets me out of here

or keep me in

I want to stop now:

I made some tea.

poetry
is a way
into the worlds
I follow
without knowing

Peter, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I especially like the concluding five lines.

Thanks, Les.

I even thought of bringing those five lines to read at the tea hous last night.

Peter
