Time Out of Mind Reprise
for Dave
It’s Sunday morning time to
break into my dream
find what I remember
I’m supposed to seem
like all the other people
walking down the street
but got to tell you
I can’t follow my feet
I can help you with sunshine
I can help you with rain
but the moon ain’t rising
I’m all that remains.
I hear your voice slowly
taking up all the space
I look out the window
it ain’t no disgrace
to feel like a rainbow
hide in the shade
I got to tell you now
I ain’t getting paid
to ask you no questions
rehearse you no lies
I’m on the way out
the sun’s on the rise.
I listen to strangers
I turn into dust
I lost my way yesterday
can’t find the bus
to Tucson or Denver
to Boston or Maine
I still need a ticket
to get on a train
my hands are both empty
my head needs a pill
I feel like I’m broken
I’m still feeling ill.

Pete, the last stanza has real rhythm to it. Your favorite songwriter, Bob Dylan, would be honored by this verse.
Les
My friend Dave had been reciting lines from Dylan's The Highlands, noting how remarkable Dylan's ease with a prosaic line could be. When I gave Dave a copy of this he asked if I'd written any music for it. I said to myself, "I don't write music, unfortunately."
Thanks for sommenting, Les.
