Four Doormats by Brian John Evans

I bought four doormats as a joke,
(I owned no home you know)
And laid one by this tree ,
And climbed on to the lowest leaves,
For some sleepy reverie;
It felt so good I dreamed at peace,
And schemed unselfish dreams:
To go where city's homeless lay-
Get them three forgiving doors-
(Those locked on outraged screams)
With a porch To keep the rain at bay,
Shut since "the worst of times",
Had freed these guys and me;
Three doors like wood headstones,
For these hardcase homeless three,
Now doormat rich and free as me.
Then another door was boarded up,
And I laid my doormat there
We lived against our locked-tight doors,
Till the Good Lord opened four.
