Evening Thoughts

It comes upon me suddenly
Grips me by the throat
And chokes before I know it,
The peace from out of me.
Bless cognizance,
And curse it too,
When day meets dusk
And memory sifted through
Leaves but one inauspicious thing--
Regret
For giving up and giving in
