The emperor of earthquakes –
Am I waiting for him
Or is he waiting for me
In the dark corner
Before I go out,
Before I come in?
Playing poker with the one-eyed dog
With someone else’s mythology,
The psyche never sleeps;
It forgets it’s dreaming, or
Slips me a card, face down.
It carves out the mortuary furniture
On a cold, damp morning -
In three stages to every correction:
First, recognize the scenery.
Then, stand up straight.
And then, look him in the eye.
Can you read minds
…faces…gestures?
Don’t tell me
I can’t know what you are thinking.
Aces in the hole.
Its all in the empathetic moment,
Not a system at all…deeper than that.
Good one, Pete. I enjoyed the read.

Peter,
I hadn't really looked closely at this piece before wicked bumped it. I find it particularly capturing in a foreboding way. It appeals to my intuitive side and the word "harbinger" comes to mind. It's a poem I could explore in depth, tell you what I like about it and what gives me a little trouble, but not sure that is always what someone wants (or needs).
Hope all is well.
Mary
Mary,
I hope the world gets a little better each day, to offset what makes it so bad some days. Everything good in my life is 'gravy.' My faith is in the grace of the universe. Joy is always joy, even on bad days. My toe's healing. My friends and chilkdren are particularly good to me...and I am witness to how special human beings can be almost every day of my life. So if I gripe once in a while in my poems, I hope people can tolerate that, take it as a sign that even the good can get better and that we always need to be vigilant against the bastards.
amo,
Peter
Not a system at all…deeper than that...meaning intuition.
There is nothing about your poems that needs tolerating, Peter. Some are just more available to me as a reader than others. This is one such poem and why I would venture to comment intricately.
It is, indeed, all in the empathetic moment.
Good to hear the toe is better and all the rest.
Mary
