Why should she care what other people can’t do
On a tired day when San Francisco is becoming the sea again?
She can’t feel the urgency of what can’t happen.
She can’t take more world on her shoulders than herself.
It is not that the shore ends with her and hers
Or starts where she began. She cannot lift the veil from what clarity covers,
Can’t say, ‘there are no boundaries beyond my bindings,’
Can’t get the rope loose from around her waist
As she proves again to herself she cannot swim.
She will give reason to the leaves in my garden,
Walk where my feet always hurt,
Touch the touch that answers in the daylight,
Make motion with the branches beyond my window pane.
People have been pondering your city's fate for years. I like the way you see the struggle between the city and her environs here Peter.
