In a Rit of Fealous Jage

He has been arrested again;
This time for selling balloons
Without a silence. I will have to get
After him, toothpaste in hand,
Before the evening news.

I have listened too long
To the windows asking forgiveness,
Too long to the river turning back,
Too long to my own soul,
Wondering.

On a Wednesday afternoon
The ball is still in the air, the police
Will never admit their mistake,
He will have to call back.

The illicit gains
Of respectable billions
Continue to accrue
In the back yard,
Among the leaves.

I cannot stand up;
Sitting makes my feet hurt.
I can hear the air
Trying to keep still
About the latest murder
Of someone else’s continent.

I have to take the banana skins
Out, watch every move. His green skin
Is in the way of his next thought process.

Oranges are exempt.

I don't get it, but I love the tone and especially, the title!

Eli Weizel said it best Pete: "And then they came for me" I get it and
I am afraid if you time-capsul this extraordinary piece and pull it out every
one hundred years it will remain very trendy and contemporary, at least,
until there is no one to dig up the capsul. tom

Peter, I endorse Tom's comments. This is one of your best. And a new mode?

After a night of the long bananas, when balloons are grounded, and oranges and officials are out of control, poetic sense is sometimes the only sense available. And the best consolation. Along with coffee.

I will have to agree to disagree with dear Mary about the title. It strikes me as unsubtle in its devices, compared to the rest. Doesn't matter. Keep it till something better arrives written on the wind.

Cheers,

Ian

Ai, thanks, Ian, on all counts except the title. It is of course a direct quote from Inspector Clouseau [played by Peter Sellers] and is perhaps my favorite comic line from the movies. The arrest for selling balloons without a permit is from near the beginning of 'A Shot in the Dark,' the second in the Pink Panther sequence.

Viva screwball comedy! Viva la revolucion!

amo,

Peter

I got an email from our friend Gwydion yesterday on this poem. She's still not able to sign into the mule forum. Anybody got a set of instructions I can send her that might work, if she decides to contribute some time?

Lilith had an orange
she knew what she was needin'
but when she couldn't find a rhyme
they threw her out of Eden

Lilith she had hairy thighs
and ate a lot of onion pies
but Adam to her more would cleave
if only she used summers eve

I only saw Eli once, when he stayed upstairs from me at my apartment with the young Israeli college kids who got in a fight with Amiri Baraka's fans over whether Amiri was anti-Semitic. We didn't speak, so I don't know what he said. lol

Well, he MIGHT have said it....I'm saying it now (pause while I say it) but he didn't thunk it up

I'm anti-semitic...don't approve of what either Israelis or Arabs are doing over there

Johnny,

I'm just an old fashioned pacifist, but I don't pretend I know what everybody else should be, since I have had a cop's foot on my nuts telling me I'd never have children; so I know what it's like to want to kill someone else, even if I never did. Instead I had three kids I'd trust the world to, even with their flaws, the little dears.

Peter
