Tom, I have to admire the way you make the reader struggle with this one to wrest the thought and meaning from it. It's like being served emu steak. Toughest bird you'd ever want to eat around an outback campfire, but if you chew and chew and chew, it's nutritive enough to get you through the next tough day.

I've chewed and chewed and chewed on your images and metaphors in this poem, and it gets easier each time I do it over, though I'm still not sure I know what's parasitic, or why, in the last line; and the titular phrase still sounds like a bad translation from Chinese or something. My bad, no doubt!

You are probably already aware that highland cattle (the ones with the shaggy coats and wide horns) share with malamutes and polar bears the ability to survive outdoors in Arctic blzzard weather that would freeze the proverbials off a brass monkey. Did you have highland cattle in mind when you wrote this?

Ian

I have been told my poetry is good. I have been told my poetry sucks like a five hundred dollar vaccumn cleaner. I have been told I should learn at least one language before I write a laundry list. I have been told to get it published. I have been to to have it burned. But, I swear by all that is right and holy, I have never been told my poetry was like an emu steak.

never...

Well it's not. At least not so far...

Btw, the emu is part of the Australian coat of arms, so invoking it was not meant as a put-down.

Tom, Here's my response to Terry on my thread. It pertains to how much space you take on the board.

amo,

Peter

Merc,

re: Tom pushing people off. I figure he's old enough to be able to know that he is doing that and that it is not fair to all those who only post once in a while. I guess, Terry, that your mentioning to me is sufficient to motivate me to say something to him. As an anarchist, I'm sure you know how much I hate being anyone else's cop or daddy or conscience, but I will take on the task.

Thanks for stopping by to read the poem.

amo,

Peter
