Friends on the Bay
It used to be that you had a full view
Holding up the lantern
-- light faulting on the waters --
Trying to get back.
You’d want to lift the night
-- return to your promise --
No risk
In the face of darkness.
Now I think of what has happened,
Your light
Obscured
By what you cannot see.
I can’t take it back
With words or
With eagles making their way
To the mountains.
No way
For time to stand still.
You cannot hold
Onto the sea.
Admit to the peace.
Admit to the silence.
Go back
To what you know.
There’s forgiveness in that.
Is this person speaking to his/her lover?...or to himself, about his failure?
