Guns Of Thunder

On a cold and bitter winter's eve
young Capt. Grayson led his men
down both sides of a quiet country
road the locals called the "Road To
Village Rhen."

Just days ago but miles behind
this little company engaged a
motivated enemy intent of mind
and ripe with rage of soul;
determined by a loyalty of goal
to gain by pain's sustaining sacrifice
a final vaunted victory.

That battle rattled every man from
Grayson down to Private Dan whose duty
digging deep latrines had blistered both
his weary hands. So as they marched upright
in quick and chilly fade of winter light,
they carried cautionary memories that beckoned
back the stench and breath of yesterday and death.

The guns of thunder pounded both the lines
for two most brutal days and bloody nights
before the screams of war and sounds of crying
fell to deadly silence with the death of dying.
