REMEMBRANCE

Here among what should be forgotten
Drab, fading autumn, apartment building view.
wishing to count up detail, all remembrance
held like stale breathe

above the cold street—oh wistfulness, oh stench and
hard fragrance of memory, oh wasteful, wishful grasping
of lingering belief, exclamations of token
moods, my benefactors,

why so still, a promise, a withdrawal, why
the dream of giving away or letting go
whatever might be lost, your shallow consciousness, returned,
broken images, against the wall?

In a moment everything is gone,
faith or beauty, the slim vision of what
might have been, brain rattled, nerves jangling, all
shallowness, petty resolve, victory given to forgetfulness.

Peter:

I am struck by the words in this poem and have read them aloud several times for the sheer joy of their sound and rhythm. There is meaning among them, I'm sure, but for the moment, I wish to remain captive solely to their aesthetic qualities.

I agree with Joe. This is full of essence and reads beautifully aloud.

The disappointments of my father's life, especially his last years, sometimes make their way into my word experiments without my especially wanting to meditate upon them. Despite one's desire to focus mainly on what is palatable, the joys of the, the possibility of a full life, sometimes we must look to the great disappointments of our forebearers.

Thanks, sherry, for visiting and commenting.

Interesting couple who commented first, huh?

You are a master of words. Lives are married, divorced, advanced, sentenced, and named by words. How happy would you be today if your mother's favorite uncle had named you, "Not Toilet Trained"? Or for that matter, "Virginia". Without words we have to think in pictures and emotions, and for us sociopaths, that ain't pretty.

Nice job Pete. Hang on to the walls when the big one comes.

the end is nigh.

Merc,

Thanx. I have not yet figured out which end is up though I sometimes wonder if that matters. We all just have to keep on...
