Old Aphorisms and Tales

1.

Open a window on yourself
Before you open
A window on the world.
One threshold at a time
Is enough to start the day

2.

I find I can’t live in
All the rooms of my house
At the same time.
One at a time
Is already too much.

3.

“Poet, and retired philosopher”

He wondered:
Does one retire from philosophy
When one gives up thinking,
Becomes wise,
Or finds that wisdom is not enough?

One caller asked if I was no longer rational,
If I was a retired philosopher.

4.

I was thinking how much a waste it is
That I should think about getting laid
As much as I do. Yes, I know I am male,
And that seems to be a condition
of being an adult male.
But there is so much else.

5.

I know I am beautiful and sexy
In my black underwear.
And I know she can get laid
Anytime she wants to,
Even at her age.
But none of that matters one bit.

Only after I posted these old pieces together as a single work did I notice the progression. They actually do fit together, despite the move from topic to topic and disparity between topics from some perspectives...philosophy and sex.
