Graduation

Graduation
They are about to leave.

High heels and tuxes, short skirts and uniform ties
Some are here to watch
Others want to set them free.

I don't really care about the graduates and crowds
There is only you.

I sit amongst babies and crying mothers,
Beaming fathers and smiling aunts
Brothers and sisters calling out
You don't answer, it is not for you.

I listen quietly to the speeches
But I must admit I sometimes hear
Grey noise, instead of heart-felt words.

She acts surprised
She gets angry
She's always composed
Careless thoughts except ...

One thought; you're there
At the end of the line
A representative of a thought.

I spot you, and smile
You don't, I know
I realize this act
I accept -perhaps detrimentally- this fact

Graduation
There is nothing new.

You still have no clue.
Then, Amin Maalouf creeps into the words
I smile recognizing the reference.

The shadow of a smile flits across
Your stoic face and I realize
It is always there.

Goodbye.
It's Graduation.
An appropriate time.

A good read, Startle, though I don't recognize some of your references, the overall effect of the poem was very much like the dozens of graduations I've attended.

Interesting , Sara. Is it not too early, though, or too late? Why now?

Its never too late, and never too early. But this poem in particular is just at the right time. Life is graduating. Can't you feel it? It is moving so fast, too fast perhaps so that it blurs and changes rapidly. I can only catch moments of it, glimpses that matter to me. Sometimes I forget, I veer off the path then catch myself .This poem is about catching myself and seeing what is beyond, even if its not ready.

The poem is perhaps too literal, too school-like but what is life if not the school of universe?

Appreciated,
Startle
