What is a Poem?

Complicated.
The first adjective to describe
Is often the last.
Failing yourselves to contrive
A meaning from the past
Scribblings of forgotten people.
Nothing else to remember
But some bits of words on paper.
Why bother?
They hold their message
Under lock and key
With poetic devices like assonance
And imagery.
Lo and behold,
If the case was cracked
All to discover is another's
Opinion--
On life and love,
Beauty and peace,
War and violence
To the dearly deceased.
All different from your own.
What is a poem but another's
Opinion--
Different, flawed,
Complicated.

Twistrjosh:

Welcome to emule. This is a well-constructed and written poem. I especially like the way this comes full-circle, from "the first adjective...to the last." I hope we see more contributions from you.

Joe

perhaps. sometimes.
*******************************
what may a poem be?

a poem may be
the exposed bone and its raw
flesh,

or a child's toy
in the room with
no corner

a watch and intense
living
or the architectural
interstices of a tough mind.

simple, rich shared
awareness
every stitch a sample
of enchantment...

twistrjosh -- Thanks for asking the question again. It needs asking again and again. above was the the answer I gave it last time I tried. I also like what you bring out about it.

shalom,

Peter

Joe-Thanks very much for taking a look at it. Rest assured that if I DO write more, it's goin here...I just don't find the time to write very often :/

Peter-I like your answer to the question as well. I love the child's toy part...since a room with no corner would be circular, it makes me think of a spotlight focused on the toy, since it would be the subject of another poem. Very cool.

(Does everyone put their names at the end? haha okay then)

Very interesting. I like the details except for "flawed". Welcome to emule!

K.Q.-Thanks for your input...I really don't like that as a descriptor for poems either...I was sort of writing this poem like a high school student would see poems...they just say that every one is complicated and leave it at that.

Imagine you heard someone say that in-class...this poem is a semi-sarcastic remark towards that kid who doesn't want to do the work and infer what he needs to from the poem.

lol That's just my point of view on what it means...even though I wrote it, part of the beauty of poems is that they can mean different things for different people smiling smiley
