It's an Egyptian trick. I think Osiris had an extra day inserted into the calendar because he was prohibited from being re-born on any day of the year. So he added a day to get around the prohibition. Something like that.

Tis one of my favorite days, too, Mary.

A day of re-birth and trickery!

February 29th is not, as I had always thought, Sadie Hawkins Day

Three micro- neurosurgeons were bragging on their skills while in their cups.
“Yea, they brought me a guy that lost all his fingers of his left hand. I got the nerves sewed so well that he can play piano today.”

“Hum, interesting, reminds me of the guy they brought me, both legs and one arm blown off. After forty-seven hours of intense surgery, he was back on the loading docks within three months.

“Well, listen, a cowboy riding his horse got hit by a freight train. All they brought me was his cowboy hat and his horse’s ass. I put him back together so well that today he is President.”

I believe Sadie Hawkins Day is November 15. Why it's that date, and why I believe it (since I don't ever recall having "learned" it) remains a mystery to me.

Peter, one of my sisters was born on Leap Year so it has always stood out. An interesting holiday for sure.

The elementary school held a LEAP YEAR dance last night, which has absolutely nothing to do with Sadie Hawkins, but just thought I'd mention it.

Joe, according to Johnny's post, Sadie Hawkins day is somewhere during that week of November. Ironically, the first day of "hunting" season is November 15th up in this neck of the woods and it might as well be Sadie Hawkins day (10 days) by the show of women hanging out in the bars looking for a man.

Hey...I finally got a pop-up tent camper! We go to the dealership today to get a demonstration on how to put it up and take it down and get the car rigged up to tow it. Can't wait for our first camping trip in it!!

Well Perc,

Not quite sure why you think that Paltalk is quaint. I have tried about 50 different mediums, from mIRC to Userplane and finally returned to Paltalk once they gave the capability to actually link to rooms. The sound quality is the highest of those that I have used, it allows full streaming video, should we ever choose to use it, unlimited participants, control over who is speaking when, etc... etc...

I am open to hear other suggestions though if you think you know of something better?

Let's forget that for now, as I don't like being proven wrong. Did you see that post I made some time ago about Shogi? I wasn't sure as I think I may have posted it close to the recent breakdown.

Shogi, the japanese variant of chess, is likely among the most difficult and complex variants due to a single rule. One can choose to sacrifice their turn to place on the board any of the pieces they have captured from an opponent. This, along with various movement and rank rules, elevates Shogi far beyond regular chess. Apparently, the japs thought it was too easy.

Hi Perc,

No, I haven't ever played shoji before, but when I was about 11 or 12, a friend of mine and I played a variant whereby as long as the king had cover, he too could check. Now that I am older I try to play by the rules. lol.

Chess was originally just an extension of battlefield tactics, (Alexander made reference to to facing an Indian army that was arranged precisely as they would be on a chess board; he also faced some of his highest casualties there), so the reason you couldn't replace a captured piece was because... oh yeah, the bugger's dead! hehe. I am not dissing shoji. I would be interested in giving it a go at some point and time. I have played a little bit of Go and usually get my butt kicked, but still have fun doing so.

Thanks for letting me know about it.

An interesting insight. If I recall, the changing of alliance was common in japanese military history. Something about those willing to die for their cause being captured. Of course the pieces and even board itself (9X9) are different, I was merely pointing out the main change.

I recently transferred the last of my e-mule postings to my p.c. If there is anyone else out there who still hasn't done this, I highly recommend that you do so while e-mule is in one of its periods of functioning smoothly.

Now i know finally what Mittens told me about Emule going down or crashing sometimes when I was still new here. I am happy to say that I am an emuler for almost a year now. Sad that it is indeed a reality-- the crashing.

I used to follow Les' advice about copying and pasting, but I got tired. When I get old, I hope emule would still be around, and that will be the time I'll find my poems again.. should they still exist by that time. I'd rather let my poems be lost here at the mule than anywhere else... ;-)

The mule isn't exactly crashing this time around. There seems to be trouble with database pointers that causes problems with data location. Of course, this could be the early signs of another crash, but the last couple of crashes have been the result of hackers. They really didn't resemble what is occuring now. Unfortunately, there isn't much any of us can do about the current situation since it is nearly impossible to notify the site's owners or technical staff.

Although I enjoy the cartoons posted after my question, I was looking forward to what various people might say about the New yorker cover. Then I was going to say what my response to the New Yorker cover was. I thought the points of view of Les and Johnny and Merc and Holly and Redmittens and K.Q. and Nolon and Mr. P. et al would be different from mine and would be worth hearing. Since this is a poetry forum, I thought the response would be both varied and thoughtful, not limited to one segment of the spectrum of opinions; and I thought her, in the fiv con thread would be the place to solicit such a non-poetic range of responses.

Peter,

Your response might have been better had you come right out and said what you, yourself, think about it. I responded to your question and thought we might get some dialogue going, but nuthin'. Is there a particular response you are seeking or a particular e-muler you are seeking it from? Regarding the cover, I personally don't find anything poetic or funny about it, but I'm one of those people who don't like practical jokes or costumes much either.

Mary

p.s. Somehow I find it hard to believe you are enjoying the cartoons.

Re: Frivolous Conversations #88
Posted by: petersz (69.181.22.---)
Date: July 27, 2021 12:58AM

Mary,

I found myself mislead by the cover. At first I found it to be distasteful, that is, racist and stereotypical. Then I read the article itself. I found the cover had no relation to the actual New Yorker article. I was hoping to map elements of the cover to elements of the article. Since the article did not refer to any of the stereotypes illustrated in the cover, I found this a little confusing. I read around the internet a little and found that the artist said he was parodying right-wing attitudes toward Obama. I think he was also tweaking liberal 'left-wing' attitudes as well. Drawing everybody out regarding the stereotypes of terrorists, Afrocentrists, the 'unpatriotic,' [look at the flag in the fireplace], Muslims...etc.

That is the beauty of parody...it is so hard to pin down. The poetry of the thing is in its power to bring out feelings without being too specific. I felt if I stated my view first, it would prejudice the other responses.

I was genuinely interested in everyone else's view of the thing.

Thanks for addressing the issue.

Cheers,

Peter

Re: Frivolous Conversations #88

That cover, in my opinion, is fiendishly clever. Fully comprehended, it's a work of genius worthy of volumes of study. However, it's creator is too clever, people won't get it. So, I think I'll tip the scale in favor of the good fight.

Of course, they might not have perceived the quiet tempest they unleashed, they may have merely thought it a funny dig against the idiots in charge and their supporters. But someone who takes pride in being clever is rarely so blatant. So why, oh why that cover?

No one of measurable intelligence would consider this a slight against the characters. They would see it for what it is, a mockery of anyone holding that view of the characters. Now what's clever about that? Not a damn thing. Unless you predicted the response. The people who didn't understand this rather obvious reversal would, due to their idiocy, respond as idiots do. They would be fearful, taking comfort in the "acceptable", thus saying the cover is "politically incorrect". The people who understood the actual intent of the cover, of course, would not follow that path. Their path would be questioning the reasons for misinterpretation by our beloved idiots. Now, that's the outside of this beautifully orchestrated device. The inside is far more fascinating.

The fools responsible for our current downward spiral are arrogant cowards driven by stubbornness and fear, unable to accept their weaknesses. The self-defeating defenses employed by those type of people, who, when faced with evidence of their inadequacies, are that of shifting blame. Ignoring their own flaws through a torrent of fury utilized in "passionately" defending their position. That is, they introduce into the argument irrelevancies, distractions, and refuse to return to the actual point. Now. These people have "politically incorrect" on the tips of their tongues. Don't step outside the lines. Do as your told. Blah, blah, blah. The leaders of our cherished idiots.

With the above paragraph eventually deduced by those who understood the cover, analyzing those who did not, a new question would present itself to those enlightened few. "There is no good beating a dead horse. What is the constructive purpose of the cover?" Ahhhh, here's the genius. The cover is itself was of minor importance, a means to an end. The goal was to stir up controversy. The subject of the controversy was also of minor importance, a means to the actual goal. The actual goal was exposing the inadequacies, and thus destructive traits, of our coveted idiots via a real-world, nation-wide debate while simultaneously providing an example of a method to overstepping them via the cover's misinterpretations, and the futility of attempting to sway them toward the good fight while their self destructive natures causing havoc on the state requires immediate action.

That, or I'm full of shit. But it was fun.

Thanks, Peter.

Percival,

Not to mention that a few people out of their audience have now stood up and paid attention not only to the issue, but to them. Controversy is great advertising and I suspect a few more geniuses have been added to their mailing list.

On a side note, did you hear about the guy who was behind Obama when he placed his prayer into the Western (Wailing) Wall in Jeruselum, removed it, and had it published in a newspaper? I bet they had a good week in sales too.

Thanks Joe, I thought that I had posted THAT video when I first edited the post above yours. Goes to show, we should all read our posts before walking away.

Funny comic you have above us, les. I find those supporting "mccain" fascinating. It's one thing to to believe lies, another to welcome them.

Continuing with the theme that everything is relevant to everything if you think of it in a certain way. A nice video of your future Ham on rye:

Where do middle-aged men come from?

The Middle Ages, much like old people come from Ancient Egypt

Which amazes me that they were able to lift those big-ass stones

They say one of those blocks weighs the same as a locomotive, and they didn't even HAVE locomotives back then.....clearly Bermuda Triangles at work there

I was going to say, "heaven?", but can see I'm probably way off. It's more likely the donut shop or hardware store.

This either has nothing to do with poetry or it has to do with the heart of poetry. I forwarded it to 48 people tonight after watching the video.

ST. PAUL, MN—Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was unlawfully arrested in downtown St. Paul, Minnesota at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Police violently manhandled Goodman, yanking her arm, as they arrested her. Video of her arrest can be seen here: [www.youtube.com] />
Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfully detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Goodman's crime appears to have been defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.

Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.

Democracy Now! is calling on all journalists and concerned citizens to call the office of Mayor Chris Coleman and the Ramsey County Jail and demand the immediate release of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar. These calls can be directed to: Chris Rider from Mayor Coleman's office at 651-266-8535 and the Ramsey County Jail at 651-266-9350 (press extension 0).

Democracy Now! stands by Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar and condemns this action by Twin Cities law enforcement as a clear violation of the freedom of the press and the First Amendment rights of these journalists.

During the demonstration in which they were arrested law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force. Several dozen others were also arrested during this action.

Amy Goodman is one of the most well-known and well-respected journalists in the United States. She has received journalism's top honors for her reporting and has a distinguished reputation of bravery and courage. The arrest of Goodman, Kouddous and Salazar is a transparent attempt to intimidate journalists from the nation's leading independent news outlet.

Democracy Now! is a nationally syndicated public TV and radio program that airs on over 700 radio and TV stations across the US and the globe.

You know what I really hate? People who say aliens must have visited because of pyramids through out the world. They say the similarity of time periods and construction methods imply aliens came down, taught us to pile up rocks, and left. Really? Really? Or maybe it could be that that is the simplest way of building the tallest structures given the resources of those time periods, and that people had a lot of time on their hands.

It wasn't ALIENS...it was Bermuda Triangles that taught them

One look at the shape of them is proof enough

Regarding pyramids, people not only had a lot of time on their hands as Percival pointed out, but, in Egypt at least, the government had hundreds of thousands of slaves to deal with. One theory has it that the Egyptians forced the slaves into hard labor building pyramids to keep them too busy to revolt. There may be some merit to that theory, but I always wonder, why pyramids as opposed to squares or circlular structures like Stonehenge? Or, why not have them just dig holes in the desert?

Excellent point Joseph, I would have to agree there that it is certainly a possibility. An interesting group of information regarding slaves and the necessary measures to prevent revolt and such can be found in study of the Spartan empire. Where's that book.. "On the Origins of War and the Preservation of Peace" - Donald Kagan.. The helots, the slave's of sparta, in the time approximating 431-404 b.c., outnumbered the spartans 10 to 1, or some such number, it's in there somewhere. Very interesting stuff. It seems that the famous spartan military superiority was achieved on the backs of helots, as well as prevented it from being wielded without extreme caution. According to this, the only reason spartan men could devote such profound amounts of time to improving their martial might was because the helots were charged with maintaining the fields and like matters. But there was a catch, the spartans could not leave the helots unattended, as the helots would revolt, and thus could not stray far from home in war efforts.

As to the pyramids, think about it. Pure logic. What's the easiest way to build the tallest and yet most stable structure using basic materials and construction methods? A pyramid.

We could have this Alien v Predator debate all day....but the fact remains that it is clear that the Egypts had cell phones, as there is absolutely no evidence of landlines

It cracks me up when archeologists theorize about how the ancients built structures so high off the ground. Don't you think that people who could align the pyramids with true north and south might have been smart enough to invent scaffolding, or a ramp system? Heck, in Egypt they could have covereed each level of the pyramid in sand then unvovered it later.

Well, keep in mind people these days have rarely seen an achievement of that magnitude. Yes, we build far bigger and complex things, but it's certainly easier. It could well be that such efforts simply could not occur to them.

Would anyone who knows how tell Keeper how to log back into the Poetry Forum here on eMule? I got an email asking for that information. Thanks, it would add to the richness of our process.

unless someone from emule replies or unlocks her user name for her, here is what i've had to do several times:

because my user name was associated with my email address, i started a new email address in hotmail (or yahoo). so that is what i suggest. set up a new email address in one of these and them come to emule and register as a new user, citing this new email address where it is required.

i've never been able to use any of my old user names once they ceased to work in the first place. every now and then i have NOT had to start up a new email address, but i've always had to come up with a new user name.

i'll bet someone else has an easier suggestion....(???)

hope she does whatever it takes, it would be good to have her back in here. (hi keep!)

Peter:

It is as Mitten says. However, after creating a new email address, one must look for the emule confirmation notice in their new junk mail folder (or its equivalent, depending on the email system). For some odd reason, I've never seen the confirmation returned to my active In Box, and I, as so many, have had to re-register with emule on many occasions. But, whatever it takes, please let Keeper know we want her to return.

Ah, people are capable of far more change than they realize. My sweet keeps, I suggest you leave god behind though, I realize some people need it at some times, but try to think of it more as those nicotine patches, you gotta quit eventually =]
