<[www.emule.com];
I found the following in my emailbox tonight. It has as much pathos and as much poetry in it as anything I've read in a while [Peter]:
Miss Jane.
Rm. xxx, Hall y. ??? Campus
University of Benin, Benin City.Edo state.
Dearly Beloved,
I write in confidence believing that if it is the wish of God to help
us
you will definitely do. I am Princess Jane, a student of University of
Benin, the only daughter of zzz who died six months ago.
With
courage I disclose this sort to you as I would want to know you better
with time despite the fact that the present world is full of dishonesty
and distrust.
As straight as a die, I am seeking for your kind assistance in the
following ways:
1) To serve as a guardian/custodian of this fund since I am a girl of
21yrs old without investment ideas.
2) To establish a smooth and enduring relationship with you.
3) Also to secure a resident permit for me in your country to further
my
education.
With sobriety, the Regent and the Counsel are fighting to top us, to
deprive us our inheritance, after inhume of my father. I have to avail
with these funds to live out, and for my schooling, I want to
transmigrate
due to the ascendancy of the substitute for my father's monarch, they
are
inhumane to us with great cruelty. Please help us so that they will not
take over what belongs to my family, as they have planned without my
knowledge because I am a female as stated by our culture.
Benignly, we wish to make you the custodian of the funds, I plead for
your
humble assistance as compensation will be put to you. I will be
grateful
to have your return mail via my direct email: (princessxxx.com or
princess xxx.com); I begged your kind heart for this. I shall
furnish you with all relevant details and will also send you our
pictures.
Be kind-everyone you meet in life is fighting a hard battle.
Sincerely,
Miss Jane.
Note: All the personal and political despair of our time appears here in this little scam letter to a total stranger (if we take this to be sincere).

Variant of the original "Nigerian Price" scam. Their denied inheritance, your account to act as a middle man, you get a large cut. Scam.

I've always had an interest in sayings, proverbs, and the like. Most from different countries tend to be rather similar but every now and then you find something special. Not to say the above is, but it reminded me of a saying in some part of Africa, "You fall in love with your rapist." Isn't that keen?
It was primarily the idioms in this thing that interested me also. Keen? puleese.
my ex used to be the first in the usa to receive freshly translated electronic service manuals...from japanese into english. he would then rewrite the manual so it made since to service techs dealing with electronic repair in the usa. for the instructions to ground something, the translation from japanese into english was "take to earth". i know they were talking electricity, but i took this forlorn translation and used it as my creed for quite awhile.
In Rwanda there is a saying that goes like this:
In a court of fowls, the cockroach never wins his case.
The rapist might be a cockroach, (he he)

A weekend without eMule...
I thought it just shut off as soon as it saw me back. What an ego.
"A weekend without eMule..."
And I thought somthing was wrong with my pc?!?!?! At least two things are good to know:
1. I was mistaken
2. Emule is back!
K.Q.
I get to wondering
what a paper mache world we live in.
Al Gore, the Nobel Prize for peace.
I would prefer the honesty of my friend,
the fireflier, with whom I disagree on almost everything,
to the mish mash of Tipper Gore's husband
standing as the the ultimate symbol
of what 'peace' means in our time.
Peter
I concur.
It's not so much what peace means as what it says about the Nobel Prize.
It says to me that those who once invested themselves in actually seeking knowledge and exploring what happens in the world now find it much easier to see what's playing at the movies as their guide to world events.
Surely there are hundreds of people on the planet that have made great efforts and real sacrifices toward peace in whatever place they are living. But just as surely no one took the time to either notice or report it. I would prefer to have heard about one of those unknown heroes.
The Nobel Peace Prize, like a grand jury indictment, could just as well be given to a ham sandwich.
K.Q. says she is having trouble signing on to eMule right now.
It may be a local thing, because I just got on, but it is odd that only one person has anything dated 10-14-07 on the list.
While on the subjuect, I have never tried to figure out where this server is. It appears to be 6 hours from EDT according to my clock, which puts it somwhere in the Pacific.
5 for me.
While on the subjuect, I have never tried to figure out where this server is. It appears to be 6 hours from EDT according to my clock, which puts it somwhere in the Pacific.
The server is in Georgia, Steevo. GMT or London Time is the default setting for theforum, but you can change it by going to "my control center", then scanning down to "option" and clicking on "Forum Settings" which will show a time box on the upper right of your screen which can be changed to any time zone you wish. Then magically all times on the posts you read will reflect the time that they were posted in your time zone.

Well, at last I am back and hopefully functioning. For the past days I was receiving a message that said server error. I am not sure what that means but am glad to be back today and hopefully tomorrow too!!
Thanks, Peter.
Has Keeper ever come back? I miss her and many others too, but her in particular!
K.Q.
Khalida, the server was off for a time last weekend, not a problem on your end of the net.

‘I won’t drown.’ How these words came about.
I typed in the word ‘Kris’ and went back to the first time
I knew it referred to that English poet.
I went looking for you and I found myself.
I took the direct route, line for line,
And came to the commentator pointing back to the poem.
He said he didn’t think he could go that far
And come back with what I brought to him.
That was the first time I doubted what he said.
He writes the most lyric narratives and can swear up a blue streak.
I have heard him say, ‘Goodbye, I won’t be back,’ half a dozen times,
Or something like, or, ‘I think I’ll take up knitting’ when his poems were rejected
By some fool sitting behind some editor’s desk of some magazine
That routinely publishes second-rate poetry…when he has never written
A second-rate poem in his life…so why should I believe in knitting?
Just thinking about my poet-friend who I have never met,
Will never meet, ‘cause he lives on the other side of the pond
And I can’t swim makes my head swim. But that’s alright.
I won’t drown.
Peter:
I think you've got it.
This one struck a note for me while researching some other stuff. No, not that Dylan, this Dylan.
In My Craft or Sullen Art
--Dylan Thomas
In my craft or sullen art
Exercised in the still night
When only the moon rages
And the lovers lie abed
With all their griefs in their arms
I labour by singing light
Not for ambition or bread
Or the strut and trade of charms
On the ivory stages
But for the common wages
Of their most secret heart.
Not for the proud man apart
From the raging moon I write
On these spindrift pages
Nor for the towering dead
With their nightingales and psalms
But for the lovers, their arms
Round the griefs of the ages,
Who pay no praise or wages
Nor heed my craft or art

Les,
I read a book in 1963 titled The Craft or Sullen Art. It was a collection of essays on modern poets, Thomas among others. It was the book that lead me to his fine poems. Thanks for the reminder.
Peter
I thought, since I live in the United States I should take the opportunity to wish each of you a happy Thanksgiving wherever you live. For me it has always been a chance to celebrate the human family, so I hope you will take the day to enjoy whomever you get to spend the day with.
cheers,
Peter
Thanks Peter, and a happy holiday season to you and to all who frequent E-mule.
Les
I ran across this poem in an anthology here at e-mule. It's by Louis Doudek, a Canadian poet of the last century.
For you, you
For you, you, whoever, wherever you are
in time to come, in a year or in fifty
who have grabbed me, found me on the cluttered bookstall
and gone, book clutched in your hand, or stuffed in pocket,
to the near café or steaming snack bar
and over the pie and coffee opened up the pages
for you, quiet girl, young man,
in the youth of your life, who read some pieces
then turn to your own thoughts, your emotions
and write your eight lines, or fifty
yes! yes! I would arouse in you
the spectral nerve
sweet as sex, for this craft
its breath of life wafted out and recorded
that it may be such a stir one time, for you
To all,
It is seldom that I am able log onto eMule so I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all the best this Holiday Season.
John
Good to see you posting again, John. Best wishes to you and your family during the holidays and throughout the new year.

John:
I missed you, man. Hope all is well with you and your family. Have a great holiday and I hope to see you posting again real soon.

HAppy holidays to you too John, and to all emulers!

uh can't we get this to 100 already. Ha this forever long wait for the 100th post. I tell you.
Thinking about all of you. Can't seem to delve into poetry too much these days and wishing I could, if for no other reason, to spend time amongst you. Please know, however, that I still cherrish e-mule and all of you. Merry Christmas.

Beautiful child, Mary. Merry Christmas and a blessed new year to you and your loved ones.

I watched "An Unreasonable Man" tonight and was pleased tolearnmore about Ralph Nader. It thought it worth seeing for those who support his positions and those who might be discontent with him. It will be on IndependentLens on PBS again sometime in January.
Peter
I watched the movie "The Notebook" tonight and it has to be one of the best love stories I've ever seen. Jack, it's got the Good-Bye girl beat by miles. I highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't seen it yet.

Computer Question...... a dah! moment.
By the way you guys, I got a new computer before Christmas! Anyway, it's got the dreaded VISTA operating system. Like everybody else, there are things I don't like about that.
The problem is that now when I'm on e-mule....or other places, I only have the browser up at the top and not the bar with File, Tools, Edit....etc. so when I want to copy and paste parts of a poem to comment, I can't.
I'm sure it's there somewhere, but how do I find it or get it to come up???
Marty
See message below.

Marty, try right clicking on something you wish to copy and see if a menu pops up. If that doesn't work a couple of things come to mind immediately:
One: Call the support number from your computers "Start" menu.
Two: Go here and download Firefox, it's faster, easier to use and has far fewer bugs: [www.mozilla.com] />
Les
Thanks much, Les. I think I've tried right clicking, to no avail. I've also used Firefox in the past and may try that as well. Although maybe replacing VISTA with Windows XP will be the ultimate solution. I just thought maybe the tool bar is simply hidden somewhere and it's only a matter of finding it. Again, thanks for you willingness to help.
Marty
Marty, on my newest version of Internet Explorer, which I never use, the bar is also hidden. There is a "tools" icon on the right hand side of the search bar which looks like a gear icon. Click on that and see if there is something called "menu bar". If there is click that, and the commands, "file", "edit", "view", "favorites", "tools" and "help" should appear. If you can't find an icon for "tools" call the help number.
I've hear that Vista is more stable than XP, so I would remove it only at the advice of a Microsoft rep. since the operating system runs all the other systems on your computer. You can use any browser you like, but replacing the operating system is a major move which I would not recommend.
Les
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/04/2022 12:36PM by les712.
Well, if the hardware isn't dependent on vista to run, swapping operating systems would only cost you the software (programs) reliant on vista. That would be as simple as wiping the hard drive or getting a new one and installing XP. Hard drives are cheap and I assume you have your old copy of XP. But hell if I know, just an unfounded idea.
Ask an expert. And I wouldn't use the computer's help channels, those poor bastards have to deal with so many hopeless people every day that it's wonder they don't get hazard pay. Likely a small local business computer shop around somewhere.
And don't post pictures of kids on internet public areas. Ever. To say it's a bad idea is to say the sun is hot.
Thank you, Les. I would think that the basic function of copying and pasting has just got to be available. I'll try some of your suggestions.
Mr. P, Percival I presume, hi by the way....I have thought about there being reasons why not to post pictures of kids on the internet, but I would be interested to hear what you think they are.
Marty
Aha Les! That worked. It is, indeed, the gear looking thing on the far right. Thanks again.
Pedophiles. While this isn't a hotbed of nefarious activity, it is the internet. And there aren't as many borders here as people like to think. It's also very simple to get someone's home address with little information and manipulation. The problem may seem remote, but I assure you it's not. All in all, why take the risk?
Percival,
I am one of those people who believes that locks only keep the honest people out. I don't laugh in the face of danger, but also don't let fear of evil be my guide.
In the case of pedophiles, I believe statistics show that something like 2%, or less, go after strangers. Statistics show that crimes against children, in general, the greatest percentage of time are perpetrated not only by someone the child knows, but someone related to them.
It is my feeling that letting a child visit a neighbor unattended, dropping them off for bible school or cub scouts, or even allowing a dear family friend, boyfriend, or step-parent to babysit poses a greater risk than posting a picture on the internet. Having pictures of a child around the house when a repairman or contractor is doing work for you poses the same, if not greater, risk.
Pictures of children from all of our local schools are printed weekly in our newspaper's "Student of the Week" column with their full names and ages captioned below them. If you go to "MY Space", you will find a multitude of family pics on people's profiles.
Is there a possibility that some bastard will target a child to bring them harm? Always. Internet or no internet. With all that said, my grandaughter means the world to me and I would protect her life with my own, as would her father, mother, uncles, or any of the very few others we place in her charge. We have a custom knife maker and several hunters in the family, so if you or anybody else who visits e-mule gets the idea of bringing harm to her, know that she is not an easy target.
And I'm pretty sure that for as long as Terry is with us here, he would love nothing more than the challenge of hunting you down as well.
With all of this said, I appreciate your concerns, Percival. And as I believe that paying too much attention or challenging evil can sometimes feed its insatiable hunger, I may, sadly, very well heed your advice.
Warm regards,
Marty
Relax. You seem to have taken advice as a threat.
I assume you're defensive at the idea of my implying you intentionally endangered your grandchild? Not so. I had assumed you were not as familiar as I am with the environment. I was trying to help. I grew up with the internet, I keep company with the same types of people. I know more about it.
Now, this is the important bit, I did not warn you about emule, I warned you about posting pictures on the net in general. There is as much bad on the internet as good. Think about what that means. The entire world capable of exchanging information at a rate previous incomprehensible. And anonymously. Previously isolated groups of deviants now capable of gathering in relative safety. These deviants, shunned from society, become proficient in their seclusion. Their community is the internet. Their livings are made on the internet. Their lives are the internet. With enough knowledge of how the system works, no amount of physical threat can reach a competent expert.
Now, however you perceive this advice is out of my hands. But I've given it. As a side note, try megan's list. Just google it. It's a government run website that tracks convicted pedophiles. Type in your zipcode and they'll give you a list of known pedophiles living in your area or any other for that matter.
I agree somewhat with Percival on this. Keep this fact in mind, everything you have ever written on the web and many things about you that you did not write are accessible to millions upon millions of people on the web. If I could cut and paste a photo for Gouwerijn who lives in the Netherlands on my post, other people could do that also. Sick people don't need much encouragement, I think Percival is just giving you a heads up here, which to me makes some sense.
Les
Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/06/2022 03:57AM by les712.
And a note on how helpless the people who attempt to prevent these things are. A recently tracked pedophile nicknamed "swirlface" was caught, not by the people who's job it is to catch them, but by a few netizens familiar with the most basic of computer functions.
Now, the pedophile in question was named "swirlface" because in his photographs he would use a very basic option in MS Paint. That option was "swirl", it swirls a section of a picture, basically making that section look like a whirlpool, thus making the original area imperceivable. He swirled his face. Now, that seems like a problem, doesn't it? Well, it was for the people who were supposed to catch him. It was a problem because they were incompetent. They'd known about him for quite some time, tried quite a few things to catch him. Had plenty of swirly pictures. They were getting no where.
Miracle of miracles, someone who's actually touched a computer, who has nothing to do with the people charged with catching pedophiles, sees the picture and simply goes into MS Paint and uses the "UNswirl" option on the picture. Pedophile caught.
Percival and Les, I hear you both.
Percival,
My cackles do go up at the thought of anything happening to my loved ones. And I would find it difficult to forgive myself if I played party to it in any way. I didn't take your advice as a threat, but simply felt threatened by the notion. Thanks for the info. As you say, there are folks who spend their waking moments plotting to do no good. It is foolish to help them along in any way, but it is also wrong for good people, the majority I think, to live in constant fear of them and prevent us from sharing our lives with one another. It's a sad state of affairs.
Les,
I'm aware of the sex offender register and have checked it myself a time or two. These people are everywhere. And if someone didn't know the area where I live, they do now.
Keep this fact in mind, everything you have ever written on the web and many things about you that you did not write are accessible to millions upon millions of people on the web.
This isn't the first time you've explained this to me and I guess I don't listen very well. I tend to be too open with others, in general, and do forget that e-mule doesn't have walls. It's the only site I visit where I chat with people and I forget it doesn't mean that what I say or post here stays here.
Thanks to both of you for the warning. I'll try to be more mindful.
Marty
Emmm. Now, you know I can't just let you off when I have such a perfect chance to toy with you, Marty. I have yet to receive and apology for this precious little snippet, "love nothing more than the challenge of hunting you down." Emmmmm?
Percival......"you" as being anybody. smooch.
Then I will consider you in my debt =]
I tend to be too open with others, in general, and do forget that e-mule doesn't have walls.
When I was teaching, the first thing we explained to students about the internet was that what they say on the web doesn't necessarily stay on the web.

MMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm,
A contentious issue, and of course we should be careful. I'm in the process of designing a website for my son, but I'll be fucked if I'm not going to allow him a section of photos, him in his Judo suit etc, pics he's proud of, because of the possibility some perv may get off on it.
I think the issue here is how protect out Kids from dangerous communication, the chat rooms and programs, it's that delicate balance of invading our Kids lives and keeping an eye out for them. Personally I say to mine - use your common sense, obviously NEVER EVER meet anyone you don't actually know in person, etc etc.
I may be wrong, but I think it's vulnerable kids on the whole, kids who lack a connection and a basic communication with their parents that are mostly at risk. Kids who are open to outside affection who perhaps need it and so inevitably are easily taken in by these sly sickos. Sad but true I think.

My, my! A good point by Camus!
What I've learned from my time on the net (quite a bit of time) is that the nefarious elements are prevalent everywhere on the net. This is, after all, their home. And one can come and go very easily without being noticed, as I said, there aren't as many walls. Not nearly as many. What you may easily perceive as a dangerous person in real life can mask their personalities and true intentions very easily.
And keep in mind that there are sections of the net none of you are familiar with. What you may think are the youth communities on the net are in fact not. Take Youtube and Myspace for example. While you've only recently heard about them and had little time to considered their impact, they are actually commercialized versions of things that have existed since the beginning. And if you think they're dangerous, you should see the things that don't make mainstream.
All in all, remember that this is not your place. You're a visitor, only seeing the shiner bits designed specifically to take your vacation money.
Oh, and anyone with even a mild imagination can find these DARK DANGEROUS PLACCCCEESSSSSSSSSS. Boo. It may be difficult for you to find them but I assure you thats not the case for kids.
There's a bunch of programs designed for parents to monitor their kid's activities on the net without the kids knowing. Go find some.
i will be reading these poems of yous people when i get online sometimes in the near future i gots only an hours to bes on da pc b4 my time goes away and i has to sleep but i post yuos all one of my latest writings from the 07 archivals files and yes i'm being silly i don't uselee talk dis way eh

Unfortunately, None of the candidates for President seem adequate to it. I am just afraid that the current rulers of our country have done too much damage to its constitution and to its democracy for us to recover easily. I hope everyone will remember that it is not just the leader, the President, that makes this thing work --it takes even more than a court system and the legislatures...all of whom have failed us for the last seven years on. I am sick at heart that the Precidency is occupied by someone who did not win the election, that the Supreme Court does what it is told to do by the fanatical right wing, that conscientious people are spied on by their government...the list goes much further, far beyond not believing a next elected president will be able to undo this mess.
I am not an alarmist, unfortunately. I wish the above words were just paranoia. But I am too sensible to believe in quick solutions and too naive political to be able to offer practical solutions.
No. Naming a choice between Obama and Clinton and Edwards or Romney and Thomson and Guiliani (many of these seem like off-the-deep-end wackos to me rather than alternatives for President of the United States of America) seems a futile exercise unless Americans start taking democracy and the Constitution seriously.
I am grateful that Marty brought this subject up. We are need to consider the life in which our poetry is written if we want it to be taken seriously.
But, like they say in Chicago, vote early and vote often.
Cheers,
Peter
I'd be curious to hear from some of those folks outside of the U.S. to see what they've heard about the upcoming elections and who'd they prefer to preside over these United States.
Les
preside? interesting choice of words. Les.
Thanks for posting the Newsweek article, Les. It was a good read.
Obama caught my eye (and ears) from the minute he stepped up to the platform. And since I generally find it difficult to sift through all the rhetoric in a political campaign, it was good to find out that he continues to live up to my initial impression of him and has not buckled under pressure to lower his standards. I think he's a fine human being and not that he "would" make a great leader, but that he already is.
Mary
My sentiments match Peter's to the letter, although I find it very difficult to remain as calm as he seems to be.
While it is true that the political party machines leave us very little from which to choose, it is, nevertheless, our obligation as free people to vote. Some choice is better than no choice. We must conscientiously use the voting franchise that was won for us more than 230 years ago and for which so many have since fought and died to maintain. That is why I will go to the polls next month to vote in the primary election, and again in November, for the candidate I think will give us the best chance to restore some of the freedoms we have permitted our current leaders to take away.

Great service you provide, Les. When I used to teach in Indiana, at Purdue, the state did not recognize MLK day, even though it was a national holiday. so, since they made the students come to school, pretending he never existed, that day I would teach one of his speeches, usually, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." Make some use of the day anyway, despite the racists in government. I am so glad to not have to deal with the bigots on that level anymore.
Peter
Yes, Les, thanks for the link. Martin Luther King even addressed the injustice in healthcare back then, which has only become more and more relevant as time has gone on. There is a quote of his I hope to find and be able to use during "Cover The Uninsured" week this Spring.

I guess this is a far more dangerous and impersonal world than I care to realize. It is apparently dangerous for me to mention that a close relative will be appearing on a television show.
We often look at things the way we see them and because I would be interested and excited to see emulers or any of emulers close relatives on television or featured in a magazine article, etc., I just assumed it would be likewise.
I would never have thought that there are hackers already in my computer just waiting to get the information that would help them hack their way into my relatives' computers and that by finding out they'll be on television, they now have exactly the information they need to do so.
Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 02/10/2021 10:39PM by UPMarty.
Not politically incorrect. Dangerous. Should anyone be attempting to hack any of those people you just mentioned, they'd likely have your email and surfing habits in an attempt to gain more information about their actual target. You just provided them with a little bit of real name, occupation, location, and relation, the rest of which may be filled in by simply watching this show.
Again, the chance is slight, but it is there. Next time don't mention personal info is all, or at least cut back on it.
Percival,
I'm not sure what you read, but I never mentioned an occupation or location. Although, as you say, they may very well ask her those things straight out on national television in front of God and everybody. They more than likely will give out the web address where her products are featured which probably has the e-mail address where she can be contacted directly. So why anybody would want to go through all the hassle of hacking into my computer so they could hack into hers when they could go straight to hers, is beyond me.
But hey, thanks once again for setting me straight. No personal information. robotics.com.

Police said John Alfred Pierre Dennis Jr., 59, was killed in his home on Hansom Drive in the Oakland hills then driven in his car to a spot near Montara State Beach in San Mateo County
A much admired faculty member at both Saint Mary's College in Moraga and City College of San Francisco was found apparently shot to death in his car near a San Mateo County beach late Saturday, police reported.
Police said John Alfred Pierre Dennis Jr., 59, was killed in his home on Hansom Drive in the Oakland hills then driven in his car to a spot near Montara State Beach in San Mateo County by the suspect, Troy Thomas, 43, of Oakland.
Police arrested Thomas for the killing.
A San Mateo County sheriff's deputy on patrol about 11 p.m. Saturday saw the car parked and went to talk to the driver. Thomas was in the front seat and the deputy saw an arm protruding from under a blanket in the rear. It turned out to be Dennis' body under the blanket.
Oakland homicide investigators were interviewing Thomas on Sunday night and Sgt. Rick Andreotti said police were not yet sure if, or how, Thomas and Dennis knew each other.
Once it was determined who Dennis was and where he lived, Oakland police were contacted and went to his home in the 8000 block of Hansom Drive where evidence of a bloody confrontation was found. Oakland homicide investigators and police department criminalists spent much of Sunday at the house gathering evidence.
A native of Berkeley, Dennis held a Ph.D. and master's degree, both from Stanford University, and a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
He was a faculty member at CCSF since 1980 and at Saint Mary's

since the mid-1990s. He was affectionately known as "Dr. D" at both campuses.
According to the Saint Mary's Web site, Dennis was a lecturer in the School of Liberal Arts and also was the director of the school's High Potential Program, which was started in 1973. The program has enabled hundreds of students to "scale the wall" and become the first in their families or communities to graduate from college.
As part of that program, Dennis led a transition program to help prepare them for the rigors of college.
In biographical information on the CCSF Web site, Dennis wrote "students are at the heart of quality teaching. It's not about me, it's about the students. They always rise to the level of my highest expectations."
According to the CCSF site, Dennis was for 17 years a lay chaplain for Catholic Charities at the Bryant Street Jail in San Francisco, a lay "preacher" at Saint Benedict's in East Oakland, an avid journal writer, poet, liturgical dancer and an avid traveler.
A September 1968 Tribune article reported Dennis graduated from Paso Robles High School and although nominated for the United States Naval Academy in 1966, instead chose to attend UCSB where he was the highest ranking freshman in his class. Even 40 years ago he had aspirations of becoming a college instructor, the article said, as well as possibly a lawyer or state diplomat.
As a college sophomore, he was awarded a regents scholarship to study French and history at the University of Bordeaux in France. Always an outstanding student, he attended junior high in San Francisco and was a member of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. His mother was a teacher at Madison Junior High in East Oakland, the article reported.
Happy Valentine's Day:
An article from the local newspaper:
A Charleston radio station is observing Valentine's Day with a reminder that Cupid sometimes misses his mark. WKLC-FM, better known as Rock 105, is giving away a free divorce.
Valentine's Day isn't all hearts and flowers, says WKLC Program Director Jay Nunley. There is a darker side, he said, "where maybe you despise your spouse and resent the entire day."
Through 4 p.m. on Thursday, Valentine's Day, applications for the free divorce will be accepted on the classic rock station's Web site, [www.wklc.com]. The winning name will be drawn at 5 p.m.
Nunley cautions that this is a real divorce and people shouldn't enter if they aren't serious. Also, people expecting a long, drawn-out legal battle should hire a lawyer because the Rock 105 contest is for a relatively uncomplicated divorce.
Charleston attorney Rusty Webb will handle the actual filing.
"Sure we can give away concert tickets, and we do," said Nunley. "That's going to make you happy for a little while. This is the chance to make someone happy for the rest of their life."
Fitting, considering the fans of that music.
What, classic rock? You'd think they'd be used to the same old thing over and over
Literally snowed in. E-mule is quiet. Just thought I'd drop in to say hi. Hi. Tried to write a poem today, but couldn't.

Yeah, what's with that? Didn't know President's Day Weekend was such a big one.
Hi folks,
I know that some of you are chess enthusiasts, so I thought that I would share this game with you...
I feel that this is one of the best games I have ever played (past move #4 at any rate lol). You'll need to take a chess board to play it out to see it real time, but I was playing black and was caught napping early on by a brilliant offencive move that crumbled my initial King-side Indian defence and had me scrambling to contain and rebuild.
Here is the game:
WHITE: Callum Andrew Smith BLACK Bruce Herbert Fader
1.White e4 Black e5
2.White Qh5 Black g6
3.White Qxe5+ Black Qe7
4.White Qxh8 Black Nf6
5.White d3 Black d5
6.White c3 Black dxe4
7.White Bg5 Black exd3+
8.White Ne2 Black Nbd7
9.White Bxf6 Black Nxf6
10.White Nd2 Black Bf5
11.White Nf3 Black O-O-O
12.White Ng5 Black d2+
13.White Kd1 Black h6
14.White Nh7 Black Qe4
15.White Qxf6 Black Qc2#
Ultimately in my thinking there were two things that allowed me to come back and win this game. The most important one was him allowing my pawn to charge to the second to last rank, underestimating its danger; which was key to my victory and second, his tenacious and single minded effort to free his queen from my quarantine, which in turn drew his resources away from my own objectives (of establishing a pseudo Indian Defence for my King on Queen-side (which took me half of the game)), while simultaneously using part of my blockade to establish my cover file for the coup de gras via a knight sacrifice in the final moments of the game.
All I can say is thank goodness my dad gave me a chess calendar that one year which I used to pour over the games to see if I could out checkmate the masters by using fewer moves than they did, as well as those years wherein I would purposefully force queen trades early on so as to learn to not be entirely reliant upon them (power pieces). Both these things allowed me to calmly regroup from a devastating initial assault and put together a plan to defend, divert and destroy. Callum's fear of losing his Queen ultimately caused him to lose focus on what was happening on the rest of the board.

PS: Virtually all other games in my "best played" category would be ones I lost to vastly superior opponents that forced me to step things up a level just to lose with some dignity )
flings board across room
scattering pieces askew
best endgame ever
Congrats Brucefur!
You know in the japanese variant of chess you can use your turn to introduce any pieces captured from an opponent. They say this magnifies the possibilities far beyond the scope of regular chess. Shogi, or some such, is the name. Of course it's other rules are slightly different as well. Either way, not my expertise.
I suggest you try RTS, or TBS. Real-Time strategy and Turn-based strategy video games. If I recall you played civilization 4, and if I'm right that not quite what I'm talking about. Turn-based are essentially chess, though there are few that would match it's difficulty as they aren't built to be played in the same manner. More like snacks but there are a very few interesting ones. I enjoy seeing the different styles of strategy in each.
Real-time, the more hardcore, though most are built for casual play, has both players acting at all times throughout the game. The standard procedure is both teams start with the basic building unit, enough recourses in the "bank" to begin building primary infrastructure, and a chunk of resources near by to be gathered for building more elaborate production buildings and army/building units. Units and buildings have different build times and abilities, range, armor, speed, blah, blah.
The gold standard for this genre is Starcraft, the creator of this being Blizzard entertainment, their most recent RTS is Warcraft III. They don't need very good computers, Starcraft especially as its got to be 10 years old by now. Still regarded as one of the best though. If you get either, be sure to purchase the "battle chest" package as it includes the necessary expansion packs which are updates made for further balancing. The newest, most elaborate RTS, is Supreme Commander. The playing fields are hundreds of kilometers large involving up to 500 individual units per team. Better have a kick ass computer for that though.
And I thought watching a chess match was the pinnacle of heart-pounding excitement....but reading an actual play-by-play...wow!
Does anyone know whether John Poff, who posted some poems in USP a couple of years ago, is posting now under a different name, or where he can be contacted?
Ian
John's last post was in January 2007, go to the Private Messages and use the name spelled the way you see it in the following thread: [www.emule.com] If he does not respond to your message, he may be having trouble logging on like so many others here.
