Oh really?
Well, of course. It helps me be obnoxious.
Well, at least you don't have to try too hard at it.
I noticed that one of the music videos posted over on Lyric Central is no longer available due to a 'violation of terms of use'. I think we've had this conversation before....and certainly have been talking about such matters on mitts' (because les asked) thread, but could posting video links on Lyric Central (or perhaps on You Tube) be a violation?
Mary

Mary, in order for the posting of a link to be a violation, the owner of the music rights would have to prove that the poster intended to profit by the posting, or infringe on the owner's ability to profit.
My stand on this is that if it is anywhere else on the web, then I'm within my rights to show people where it is. Generally speaking the publishers don't care about their lyrics being published, as a matter of fact they encourage that. But they don't want videos published by other publishers because of the potential profit they might make by publishing those videos themselves, and charging advertisers who advertise on their websites.
In a court of law, if you'll read the post called "Copyright" at the top of this page, you'll see that the plaintiff (publisher) has to prove that someone sought to profit from the publishing of their work, or that the defendant (copier) diminshed the owner's ability to profit.
Written works such as poems are inherently different, publishers would be hurt by indiscriminate publishing on the web. The publisher's thinking here is that no one would buy a book of poems if they could read all those poems for free on the internet.
E-mule certainly does not profit by providing links to lyrics or video, nor do they diminish anybody's ability to profit.

Aye, the mule certainly gains very little from it, but consider this. We can merely avoid the entire problem by suggesting to our community that they merely search utube themselves. There is no reason to take any risk when the solution is so simple.
Sounds good, Les. We are only posting links to something that is already on the internet. No worries about e-mule then. I suppose issues come up for You Tube, but I won't worry about that either. Thanks.
Mary
You Tube, which is owned now by Google did pull many videos which were published by Viacom, perhaps they include one that you saw posted here. Companies such as Viacom, and a few finicky artists, such as Prince will not allow internet access to live performances of their music. CBS and AOL, on the other hand, encourage sharing of music videos.
Percival, the idea of the "lyric" threads is simply to share the written verses with other people who obviously enjoy writing. The videos are incidental to the lyrics, which is the primary focus of the thread.
Les
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/22/2008 02:05AM by les712.
Incidental or otherwise, we completely avoid any problem by not posting videos. Why even take the risk when it takes a moment to go to utube on one's own?
I'll take the risk, Percival. Others can do as they wish.
Les
Well, I'm saying the risk is to the mule, not the individual. Shrug
Well, I'm saying the risk is to the mule, not the individual.
Percival, a publisher would have to prove that e-mule intended to profit from the posting of the links, which is ridiculous. This place makes NO profit. Secondly, they have no knowledge of what is posted here, since they don't read the threads. Hence, they could plead ignorance. Finally, all any court would ever do, is the same thing that YouTube has done from time to time, which is to remove a particular video. Quit being so paranoid.
Do you really think that I would post a link if I thought I (or a website I enjoy) could get in trouble by my doing so?
Les
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/23/2008 02:28AM by les712.
I'm really sorry I asked.

Dang, I didn't think anybody read this thread.
Les
Les,
Some weeks this is the ONLY thread I read.
Peter
Ha, I assure you, you'll know when I'm being paranoid. But if it's legal, I'm fine with it. I don't know the limits, and so will not take the risk, especially since it would be more than myself I would be risking. If you know the laws governing, do as you please, but if you don't, I ask that you do not.

The 7/11 chain of minimarts.
3:30 am thank all 10,000 gods for 7/11!
7-Eleven is in a lot of places, but they're not ubiquitous, even here in the Northeast, you'll find what's called a Wawa instead
I think highly of 7-Eleven's coffee in my area,(as good as Dunkin'Donuts) but have had bad experiences in other parts of the country with it.
Same is true for Hess gas stations....great coffee here on Long Island, sucks elsewhere
A high proportion of 7-Elevens are owned by those of Indian (not woo-woo) descent
I always found the gas to be great at Hess stations around the country. It doesn't taste quite the same here.

New York City, NY – Award-winning journalist and host of Democracy Now!
Amy Goodman is the first journalist to receive the Right Livelihood
Award, widely recognized as the world's premier award for personal
courage and social transformation. The annual prize, also known as the
Alternative Nobel, will be awarded in the Swedish Parliament on December
8, 2008.
The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 to honor and support
those "offering practical and exemplary answers to the most urgent
challenges facing us today". Goodman has been selected for “developing
an innovative model of truly independent grassroots political journalism
that brings to millions of people the alternative voices that are often
excluded by the mainstream media.”
Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the country,
Democracy Now! is a daily grassroots, global TV/radio/internet news hour
airing on more than 750 public radio and television stations and at
[www.democracynow.org.] />
Goodman said, “I am deeply honored that grassroots, independent
journalism and the hard work of my colleagues at Democracy Now! are
being recognized in these critical times. I strongly believe that media
can be a force for peace. It is the responsibility of journalists to
give voice to those who have been forgotten, forsaken and beaten down by
the powerful. It is the best reason I know to carry our pens, cameras
and microphones out into the world. The media should be a sanctuary for
dissent. It is our job to go to where the silence is.”
Goodman and two Democracy Now! producers were arrested last month at the
Republican National Convention while reporting on street demonstrations.
Charges were dropped after widespread public outcry. The video of
Goodman's arrest was among the most watched YouTube video's during the
convention week. It has now been viewed over 860,000 times.
Amy Goodman writes a weekly syndicated column with King Features which
runs in major newspapers throughout North and South America. She is
co-author with her brother, journalist David Goodman, of three New York
Times bestsellers: Standing Up To the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in
Extraordinary Times; Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and
the People Who Fight Back; and The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing
Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them.
Goodman’s reporting on East Timor and Nigeria won the George Polk Award,
the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting, and the Alfred
I. DuPont-Columbia Award. Her other awards include the first ever
Communication for Peace Award presented by the World Association of
Christian Communication, the Puffin/Nation Institute Award for Creative
Citizenship, The Paley Center for Media “She Made It” Award, and the
Gracie Award for American Women in Radio and Television Public
Broadcasting. Goodman has also received awards from the Associated
Press, United Press International, and the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting.
Goodman shares the 2008 Right Livelihood Award with Krishnammal and
Sankaralingam Jagannathan of India, and their organisation, Land for the
Tillers’ Freedom, for their work dedicated to realising in practice the
Gandhian vision of social justice and sustainable human development;
Asha Hagi of Somalia “for continuing to lead at great personal risk the
female participation in the peace and reconciliation process in her
war-ravaged country.”; and Monika Hauser of Germany, gynaecologist and
founder of medica mondiale, “for her tireless commitment to working with
women who have experienced the most horrific sexualised violence in some
of the most dangerous countries in the world, and campaigning for them
to receive social recognition and compensation.”

peter,
i was aware of that. but per my post- it was for those who would be interested in what he had to say.
Peter:
I suspect that the speech was a team effort penned by Gore along with a crew of sycophant speechwriters. That is usually the case with high-powered people in the public eye. Now that I think of it, though, a man who took credit for single-handedly inventing the internet probably wouldn't hesitate to take credit for writing an entire speech (lol). Anyway, you can ask your question at the following site:
The site claims that Gore does not have his own email address, so this is probably the best you will be able to do.
Good luck.

It is so quiet on this site that my next post may sadly be self fulfilling prophecy.
Aye, if you haven't heard, all the breakdowns, hacks, delayed repairs and what not have crippled us. And we moved down on the search engines.
From the website DisneyLies:
The Legend: There are a number of bizarre coincidences between the lives of Walt Disney and John F. Kennedy.
Walt Disney died in 1966; John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.
The names Disney and Kenedy each contain seven letters.
Both men were particularly concerned with how Americans feel about things.
History remembers Kennedy in part for the Bay of Pigs, and Walt Disney in part for "The Three Little Pigs."
The names Lillian Disney and Marilyn Monroe have the same number of letters.
How does the whole world miss something this obvioius?
Thank goodness we have the internet or I would never have known. Nor would I have known this:

hey, here's an awesome on line dictionary...
That's an interesting dictionary, even if it doesn't have Funistrada as an entry
(neither does Wikipedia for that mattter)
However, I did find a restaurant for those in Michigan :
Thanks, red. I bookmarked it.
Thanks for the tip. That part of Michigan is one of the better destinations. Takes some effert to get there, but I try to go once a year. It's worth it. I recommend late spring or early fall. It's either too crowded or too cold the rest of the time (unless you like to ski).
funistrada –
non-dictionary "word" – a nonsense food name created for a 1974 preference survey, along with 375 real foods, to use as a control to see if those taking the poll were paying attention. Funistrada was rather well liked (better than buttered ermal or to braised trake): the survey-respondents rated it above eggplant, instant coffee, apricot pie, harvard beets, canned lima beans, grilled bologna, and cranberry juice.
Obviously the respondents to the survey mentioned by Red lack the discriminating gourmand tastes of folks from New Jersey and New York...fried bologna is a staple of diners, delis, and greasy spoons all over the east coast. I never thought of washing it down with cranberry juice and then topping off the meal with apricot pie and a cup of instant coffee though. Hmmm.
Joe
We pass around a list here at work
it's what people are bringing in for our potluck holiday lunch
If I don't say Funistrada, I'll threaten to bring Bologna Strips Marinated in Lime Kool-Aid
And i end up cooking Chicken Cutlets
Not to put too fine a point on it, but if there's a list doesn't that remove most of the "luck" aspect?
Well, that's why I put Funistrada
but seriously, some people don't cook and there'd be potato chip duplication otherwise
Sounds like my family. Amazing how many varieties of chips one can buy these days.
Back in the 70s (you know, ancient times) we used to have an annual event called the male chauvanist pig party. A couples thing. The men were assigned specific dishes to make and the women had to sample them all and rate them.
My favorite was the guy who brought baked Irish fortune potatoes.
I need some Holiday recipes. I'll give in exchange a variety of random recipes, my holiday is solid but basic, unfortunately. Of special note is my lemon chicken sauce which never, ever, fails to please. Sides, sides would be appreciated. Salads, unique deserts, maybe a special way of dressing and cooking le turkey, interesting potatoes, whatever's good.
Also some super spicy curry ones, not sharp burn spicy, but entire body sweaty spicy.
Deep-Fried Stuffing on a Stick
Ingredients:
Stuffing:
5 tablespoons butter, divided
1 pound breakfast sausage, bulk
1 cup diced onion
1/2 cup diced carrot
1/2 cup diced celery
1 bag unseasoned bread cubes, for stuffing
1 sleeve saltine crackers, crushed
1 tablespoon poultry seasoning
2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
2 teaspoons ground sage
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 quart chicken stock
4 eggs, beaten
For Frying:
Oil, for frying
2 cups all-purpose flour
Special equipment: 12 wooden ice cream sticks or skewers
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9 by 13-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon of the butter.
Brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it is cooked through. Transfer to a plate, while spooning off the excess grease, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the skillet. Add 4 tablespoons of the butter and melt. Add the onion, carrot and celery and saute until softened. Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, toss together bread cubes, saltines, poultry seasoning, parsley flakes, sage, salt and pepper. Stir the sauteed vegetables into the mixing bowl. Pour in the chicken stock and eggs and toss together. Turn the stuffing out into the prepared baking dish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and the juices in the stuffing are bubbling.
Preheat oil in the deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.
Cool the stuffing completely. Cut it into 12 squares. Remove each square from the dish and wrap it around a wooden stick, pressing it onto the stick with your hands. Make the stuffing form a log shape around the popsicle stick, leaving 2-inches of the stick exposed for the handle. This should look somewhat like a lumpy corn dog.
Roll the stick in the flour, coating it well and then shaking off the excess. Gently lower the sticks into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain.

Braised Carrots and Fennel
Ingredients
9 large carrots, peeled
3 large bulbs fennel
1 large onion
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt (to taste)
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons chopped dill
3 tablespoons chopped chives
Directions
Slice the carrots 1/2-inch thick on an angle (careful here, I nearly severed the tip of my ring finger last night while preparing the carrots).
Quarter the fennel bulbs lengthwise, remove the core and thinly slice, or roughly chop. Reserve 1/4 cup chopped fennel fronds.
Halve and slice the onion. Fill a skillet with 1/4-inch water. Add vegetables then sprinkle with sugar and salt and drizzle with 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil. Simmer covered 20 minutes, and uncovered for 5 minutes and adjust salt. Toss vegetables with fennel fronds, dill and chives.
The sugar is optional - we usually do without it because I don't think it adds anything to the recipe. A variation we use occasionally involves substituting ginger for the onion. I can't help you with the quantity here, I usually just eyeball it and stop when I think there's enough ginger. Either way, the recipe makes a delicious vegetable dish that we've used the past several Thanksgivings and during the year. You can always adjust the quantities to accommodate fewer, or more, dinner guests. The original recipe was gotten somewhere off the web, I think.

Shit that does sound tasty. I have a pretty particular taste for things though, while I appreciate things as such, I favor hearty things. Stews, pot pies, shepard pies, things jam packed with nourishing ingredients. Meat, starch, and plenty of veg in one dish. Any recipe you looking for particularly? Or should I cut to the chase and hand over the lemon chicken? It's chinese style, battered and deep fried, topped with the sauce.
On a day like today, given the morning's newspaper headlines, it's good to remember humanity's kinder side: [finance.yahoo.com] />
Les
Mr. P.
The chicken recipe is what I'm looking for...sounds even better with the Chinese twist. My wife just made an out of this world beef barley soup - more like a stew really - this past week. I'm sure she won't mind sharing the recipe, although I think some of the magic comes from her creativity at the time she makes it. There's a basic recipe involved, but each time she makes it there's a pleasant surprise or two.
The lemon chicken you shall have. But keep in mind this isn't a "twist", it's a Chinese recipe through and through. At the moment however, I feel both the exhaustion from 7 hours of cooking and the turkey coursing through my system.
Lemon Chicken
Chicken & Batter:
2-4 Breasts boneless, skinless
1/2c Cornstarch
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/4c water
4 yolks, slightly beaten
Frying oil
Green Onions
Sauce:
1 1/2c water
1/2 lemon juice, must be fresh
3 1/2Tbls packed light brown sugar
2-3Tbls cornstarch, still haven't worked that bit out
3Tbls honey
2tsp chicken bouillon
1-3tsp fresh grated ginger, its a matter of taste
1. Combine all sauce ingredients in saucepan, bring to boil, maintain at light-medium boil, stirring -constantly- with whisk so the sauce becomes thoroughly aerated, till color changes to a light brown/deep yellow. Takes about 10-15 minutes, absolutely crucial to getting this sauce right. Reduce to concentrate flavor as desired. Keep warm.
2. Heat enough oil to more than cover chicken for deep frying, 375.
3. Half breasts horizontally, as a hotdog bun. Pound breasts lightly to create rough surface for batter to cling to.
4. For batter, mix cornstarch, salt & pepper. Gradually add water and yolks.
5. Thinly slice green onions.
6. Fry chicken. Salt lightly immediately after being removed. Serve on top rice, top that with sauce, top sauce with green onions.
7. Impress friends.
Now let's see, for that soup, which sounds lovely, I have... hm.. Oh! Oatsies', a dessert. Oats mixed with some corn syrup, or some such, then topped with chocolate. It's a lot better than it sounds, I'll dig up the recipe.
Some of you might remember my talking about a new 200 mile per hour Corvette, guess who got the first one off the assembly line?
