In Soviet Russia, Yoda like YOU speaks!!
The composition process
of this poem.
What the words first, according to their sound, lyrically, like a song.
Capitalized like sentences in a poem’s form.
Made the words make the sense I wanted.
Made the sentences grammatical, mainly by adding the punctuation last.
Did not punctuate as I wrote, only after all the words were on the page.
Added title and dedication after the body of the poem was written.
Corrected typos.
Read the poem out loud, then, for the first time, for sound and to check the SENSE.
This is the process I wa presenting as an example of describing how I write a poem. It is in fact only one of a number of processses I use. I would really like to hear from other poets when they post a new poem, at least their next posting, how they went abbout writing that specific poem. I think I might learn more ways to write from you -- Angelia, Gwyn, 210, Marty et a; -- if you could tell me once or twice or more how you wrote a poem or two or more. Not just I wrote this last year and have been working on it off and on since then but I when I wrote this I did such and such.

You've got to be kidding Pete. But it's cute that you think I know how I write poems enough to be able to explain it.
A waist is a terrible thing to mime....especially if it belongs to Roseanne Barr.

Holly,
Percy's already mad.
The table placement at the Chinese restaurant last night said that we should add a period of time to get the correct astronomical sign before 1917. So I sought info on Chinese calendar reform about that time.
At [webexhibits.org] I found:
The Gregorian calendar was taken to China by Jesuit missionaries in 1582, the very year that it was first used by Europeans. Not until 1912, after the general public adopted the Gregorian calendar, did the yin-yang li lose its primary importance.
Western (pre-Copernican) astronomical theories were introduced to China by Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth century. Gradually, more modern Western concepts became known. Following the revolution of 1911, the traditional practice of counting years from the accession of an emperor was abolished.
and,
what interested me, but was not directly to the point the following on the lunar/solar calendar used by the Chinese before introduction of the Gregorian calendar [which I reformatted for my own aesthetic purposes:
I find these divisions very poetic. Maybe they can be the basis of a cycle of poems.
This meteorological cycle contained 24 points, each beginning one of the periods named consecutively
the Spring Begins,
the Rain Water,
the Excited Insects,
the Vernal Equinox,
the Clear and Bright,
the Grain Rains,
the Summer Begins,
the Grain Fills,
the Grain in Ear,
the Summer Solstice,
the Slight Heat,
the Great Heat,
the Autumn Begins,
the Limit of Heat,
the White Dew,
the Autumn Equinox,
the Cold Dew,
the Hoar Frost Descends,
the Winter Begins,
the Little Snow,
the Heavy Snow,
the Winter Solstice,
the Little Cold,
and the Severe Cold.
The 24 points within the meteorological cycle coincide with points 15º apart on the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's yearly journey around the Sun or, if it is thought that the Sun turns around the Earth, the apparent journey of the Sun against the stars). It takes about 15.2 days for the Sun to travel from one of these points to another (because the ecliptic is a complete circle of 360º), and the Sun needs 365 1/4 days to finish its journey in this cycle. Supposedly, each of the 12 months of the year contains two points, but, because a lunar month has only 29 1/2 days and the two points share about 30.4 days, there is always the chance that a lunar month will fail to contain both points, though the distance between any two given points is only 15º. If such an occasion occurs, the intercalation of an extra month takes place. For instance, one may find a year with two "Julys" or with two "Augusts" in the Chinese calendar. In fact, the exact length of the month in the Chinese calendar is either 30 days or 29 days--a phenomenon which reflects its lunar origin. Also, the meteorological cycle means essentially a solar year. The Chinese thus consider their calendar as yin-yang li, or a "lunar-solar calendar."

Camus,
Nice work with the goth, really was getting quite irritating. Pittiful you got hassled for it though eh? Is peter going on about astrology signs above me? Lord. If so, THAT should be dealt with.
"Well, as you can clearly see, your Venus is in The House of Crazy. So you'll be raped by a dog in the near future. But the real question is if that ties in with this bit about having success in romance. Well, it's an art, not a science."
And while I'm going on I'm going to mention something hilarious, which I'm sure you'll enjoy camus.
Some news station was going on about this video on the nets, some little girl round 8ish ranting about how corrupt the current government is, obviously she had no clue what she was saying. Quite elaborate. So the station has a therapist or some such on talking about how getting this child to say these things was emotion abuse, wreckless parenting, greatest possible crime next to thinking, blah, blah, blah. The wretched host and the guest screaming propaganda at each other, entire bodies flailing, like madmen from bizarro world, cackling and congratulating on their respective horrors. A disgusting thing to watch.
But my point. Everything mentioned as terrible abuse of this child is common practice for religious groups. Not even thought to be mentioned. Oh, what these eyes have seen.
It's Edvard Munch's birthday, so Google has that painting of the Home Alone kid as their logo today !
Oh, what these eyes have seen.
You're hilarious Percival, too much time in the north country I think.

Got it in my head to write a book. Anyone have advice on how to go about doing that? Besides all the important things, my main concern is naming names. Company's and their products. Listing their qualities and faults and such. Perhaps even getting their approval and payment.
Perc-
What topic/genre?
Jack
Listing their qualities and faults and such
Libel and liabilities become an issue. You can be sued for false information which is not strictly your opinion if you do not state at the outset that the opinions contained within the book are yours and do not represent empirical fact.
If you do represent your work as empirical fact, then you need studies, numbers, graphs or a core sampling to prove your claims.

Write the first hundred pages, wait a week, then send them to me.
I don't think it's a book of poetry, Peter, it's more than likely a book about video games.
Les
Les.
I think that would be fine. I was offering to proof read, edit, nursemaid, and to show a finished version to someone around here who would might know who might want to publish the book for Percy, if it were good. My reading and editing skills are not limited to the poetry I love. I have critiqued work on raising heifers to performing a circumcision, so the subject matter is of little consequence. One of my student was a professional writer of computer instruction manuals before he took my writing class, etc.
Thanks for the warning, though, Les. I though the piece might be an expose of some sort. The politicas of such a work would interest me.
Percival:
My offer was made out of professional interest. If you are serious about writing the work you allude to, I would be pleased to do any small thing I can to help you get it into publishable form.

[movies.msn.com] />
good, about damn time
Once Upon A Time In America especially
I'm truely flattered peter. But as Les said, book of video games. With all the hubbub going on with the "Hot Coffee" topic, massive video game popularity, and overwhelming complexity of the field, I though it would be a good plan to write a guide for parents. And I don't believe anything like this has been done yet. The current rating system, like movie ratings, is pittiful.
Besides the legal matters and such, checking for market potential, only light research as I have it all rather concrete in my brain, I may be able to complete it within a few months.
Anyway, how do we go about doing this? Am I to write a rough to win publishers which leads to one guiding me thru the processes?
There is a lot of information about getting published on the net, Percival. Check out this website: [www.soyouwanna.com] />
Peter, I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't do the job, I just thought you might have assumed Percival was going to publish poetry.
Les
gotcha , Les.
Perce, publishers won't ordinarily touch anything but a finished product in most fields. In some, you even need an agent or representative of some kind.
Peter-
If I were to write a book, I would certainly fedex you a manuscript.
I don't know anyone more familiar with typos.
j/k
Jack
Wow, that's gotta burn.
So my only role is writting this thing then getting an agent? Agent gets a publisher, publisher then pays for printing, distribution, marketing, so forth. What's my cut?

Dear Jack
I am so fdeased to hear that someone remembers.
Cheers,
Peter
That depends on the publisher, the market, the genre, where Martin stayed that night, etc.
Just for the record, Percival, a lot has already been written on the subject: [www.cbsnews.com] />
Les
No, that's nothing. Judging gaming by that information alone would be like judging chess by the material the board and pieces are made of. Hell, I'm being VERY generous with that. In truth, one could make a game far superior to any current with a pen and paper.
Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/14/2006 09:32PM by Percival.
Percival, if you want to publish you need to find a house that actually already publishes that sort of material. Don't bother soliciting any that does not. You must start with a query letter. A very, very, very carefully worded query letter. This is the same procedure for an agent. You don't need an agent to publish necessarily the first time unless you want one. They get a cut. An agent is a good idea to help your career if you continue to write and need help promoting yourself. It is hard to get an agent. It is hard to get an editor at a house to accept your query letter and agree to read your first three chapters.
If you can get them to at least read your query you have your foot in the door. There are many sites on the net that help with query letters. Most reject you out of hand without even reading and send you a form letter...Dear Author...
Discouraging. It turns out you need to know someone who knows someone.
Good luck. Having a good product is not enough. You have to have extraordinary luck. Do your research.
Aye, aye. Now I just need to find specifics on the cut. My monies is my monies!
There's a good article about agents, fees and the woes of beginning writers here: [www.sfwa.org] />

Does the same hold true for poetry?...I say it does
When it comes to poetry, I think there is much more consensus agreement on whose poetry is not very good, compared to consensus agreement on whose poetry is very good.

Yes Les I agree
But back to what I was saying, you don't have to be good at doing it to know when it's good or bad

Today is my birthday. Happy happy. H.
Well happy birthday Holly! Almost a Christmas baby, eh? Cheers to ya!
Happy Birthday, Holly!
Thank you, thank you. I await birthday dinner now.
Hard to believe it's less than a week away from Christmas. It's not even cold. I mean...this is Texas, but still. 80 is a bit much for December.
Not feeling too cheerful or giving either. Guess I need to sit down with A Christmas Carol, or The Chimes. Dickens knew what he was doing.
This has been a freaky month so far. I stapled my finger again today. It's not so bad going in, but having to rebend the staple so you can pull it out...not so good. Made my co-worker sick though. =) Made my entire day.
And yeah. It's 12:35ish AM, and I'm bored. Although, I did get a new book. Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis, or something like that. I've only read the first 6 chapters. It's good enough I suppose. Started reading a book by Phillip Pullman that someone on here recommended...can't get into it. Wow, I have a very high level of discontent, no? It's driving me nuts.
Anyway...I'm gonna go see if I can sleep or something fascinating. ooooh I know! I'm off to work on my fishing pole

"Bonjour"

It wouldn't feel like Christmas if I didn't stop in to say hello to friends I hold dear. I tried to write a poem this morning about how although there's no snow on the ground and the weather is unseasonably warm, and even though two people I loved are not here this year, it's still good because two things I never had before are...a cat and a grandchild. I never dreamed I could love a cat, but I do. The poetry doesn't come easily lately, so I opted to babble on friv. instead.
Turned out that Ashes (our cat), who we have endearingly called "she" since she found us in September, is actually a neutered "he". He doesn't seem to mind that we still call him "she" out of habit....and I hope he doesn't mind he has a pink stocking. I'm going to try to get the "he" thing down-pat over the coming year.
Curran, my grandaughter, is a light and a joy and will be a delight to watch tomorrow morning. All the kids are coming over in pajamas so, as my son said, it will be like the old days when they were growing up.
On another note, I just saw the movie, "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days". Not exactly a Christmas Eve special, but things are just "different" this year all the way around. For anybody who hasn't seen it, I give it a thumbs up. It's right up there with "The Goodbye Girl".
Well, this rambling gal is going to sign off to make final preparations for the holiday celebration. You are in my thoughts.
Love to all,
Mary
Mary-
A welcome ramble.
Reminded me of this.
"He almost got hit by a car"
That was the clincher
The two urchins on my porch were no salesmen
The ginger-striped article on offer was no bargain
"Mr. ya wanna free kitten?"
"There's no such thing, kid"
The irony was wasted on them
"He's real pretty... friendly too!"
Still- I wasn't being taken in
I'd been deaf and dumb when confronted by girl scouts
with cookies to sell, or kittens "For free!"
The dirtier one turned to leave
the tabby tucked precariously under one arm
The talkative one shrugged her resignation
mumbled as the door was closing
"He almost got hit by a car"
My wife had been play-acting at something domestic
She whipped the door open
"Let me take a look at... that"
"Ohhhh look Jack, he's soooo cute!"
That voice that only babies and lost kittens evoke
My "No" tried to sound firm
"He's all eyes and ears" I protested
"But he almost got hit by a carrrrrr"
I looked at the salesmen
A painting of moist-eyed orphans in an alley came to mind
The hook was set. This kid was a pro.
"Right... what will we name him then?"
Lucille has been with us sixteen years now
"He almost got hit by a car" has become a catch-phrase
It means something like:
You say you don't want it. We don't need it.
But you've been wrong before
Best to all.
Jack
My daughter and I stole our first cat, Scamper, from the two fiendish boys across the street when she was in grade school. The two spawns of Satan were alternately dunking the kittens in buckets of water and climbing up in the tree and dropping them to see if they would land on their feet after the fall. My little girl was horrified and rushed inside to get me. I waited for the boys to leave their yard and I just went over and took the one kitten I could save. She wouldn't come in the house at first and slept in the crotch of a tree in our backyard on a little blanket. The first bad spring storm and momma brought her inside.
Our second cat we stole from an abusive boyfriend after a breakup. It seems he was as abusive to the cat as he was to my daughter. I bundled Abbie up in a sheet and stole her at three a.m. when we rescued my daughter.
Our third cat, Princess Tiger Lily came to us skin, bones and half a tail. My daughter coaxed the poor animal to the porch after a week of trying. She turned out to be a boy when I pointed out two very clear indications I spotted when he jumped down from my lap on the front porch. Now it's just Tiger. He's mostly feral and still kills birds and small animals despite the fact that we feed him twice a day. He's fearless and a good watch dog/cat.
Hopefully there are no more felines in our future.
Holly

So, who of you think that Illinois's Senator Barack Obama is a hopeful for the next U.S. presidency?
Most people believe he's a hopeful, whether or not he's a good candidate, is a topic for another discussion.
Les
And I guess it depends on whether the people are "hopeful" or just him. I think I'm going to get his new book, "The Audacity of Hope" and try to sort it out. He certainly seems like a good man and an "interesting" fellow, but as you imply, that doesn't necessarily qualify him for the job.
