What would you say if I told you I loved you?
That love can't be grasped or be gathered
Like the gods in whose names
Men will murder and plunder!
Would you take my hand,
That I won't stumble,
And show me the shore
Where the monarchs still land?
Where rubble is all that remains of a home
But the tower is there where a beacon once shone
That called out to men on the perilous sea,
Would you look in my eyes when you say this to me?
As we climb in the circles, the narrow staircase
Would the echoes we make hide this pain on my face
Would your silence, the words, or the warmth of your hand
Be the place that I need, where the monarchs still land?
There is a peninsula near where I live, where monarch butterflies travel each year from many miles further south, I believe just to reproduce. They stay a short time and then head back south again. It is one of those wonders, with their fragile wings and all, how they can withstand the trip and how they know to return each year to the very same place.
It's beautiful! Thanks.
Thanks, Desi, and yvw.
I agree with Desi...beautiful.
I can't pick a favourite line or stanza;
the whole piece is exceptionally well written.
Your best yet, Marty!

Ha ha,
Lighthouses are Brilliant.
Nice.
Very nice
Marty:
The questions posed are eternal. They are nicely phrased here against the backdrop of monarch butterflies and lighthouses. I found the rhyming patterns interesting. Stanza 1: no rhyme, Stanzas 2: a-b-c-a, Stanzas 3-4: a-a-b-b. Did you do this for effect, or did it just come out this way?
JoeT
Gwydion. Wow. Much thanks.
Kris, yes, lighthouses are neat.
Thanks Blue.
JoeT, it just came out this way.
Marty
bump for the butterflies...
this piece came to mind while hoping to write something inspired by Peter's "Harmonic Resonance"
I have always loved lighthouses, being a coastal dweller when I can.
nice piece, Mary,
Peter
Thanks, Peter. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to respond to your poem as I had hoped. But in an attempt, I somehow bumped into Le Sacre du Printemps, which has nothing to do with butterflies, but much to do with Spring...and coincidently, May 29th. That has absolutely nothing to do with anything here, but just thought I'd mention it.
Lighthouses are fantastic, aren't they?
Mary
A good one Marty, I don't know how I missed this one before.
Les
Thanks, Les.
