Aaron announced that this week or weekend he will update the forum. This will mean that "the board will give you a 'system is down' notice for a
few hours".
Thanks for posting! I decided to moved up the time table a bit. Just FYI after the fact!
Best,
Aaron
you're welcome. I like your new nickname. But it reminds me of a carrot every time I see it ;-)
(root = wortel in dutch, which also means carrot)
What is the use of the private group thingy by the way?
And I just tested an innocent message by clicking on Report this message. Who is it reported to? Shouldn't it be one of us?
(Note added: never mind. I just received the email)
Also, thank you for your work!

Ok, just a few quick observations after my first clicks today:
1. It is definitely faster now.
2. Mark All Read appears to be missing.
3. Last Page does not give the last page in all messages, but about 22 pages?
4. Last Post is a great feature.
5. New/unread messages are no longer flagged?
6. The forum does not remember my name and e-mail, as it used to do. I have
to re-enter both name and e-mail each time, I mean.
7. For some reason, the announcement of changes has the thread closed.
8. The list of the 4 available forums no longer appears at the top, forcing
one to click the list and then the desired forum.
I am not sure about html codes allowed or smilies, so I will try some below.

I haven't tried the Preview feature yet. Quote this Message neither.
The Search feature still does not successfully search quotes, for example,
"tom jefferson" yeilds zip, but works without the quotes.
Is it still possible to get the threaded view? I find the flat view confusing.
Also, I just got the 'the name you entered is already registered. Log in or choose another name' message, but there's nowhere to click to log in.
pam
Can you try to log out and login as usual again? If it doesn't work, I'll send another email to Aaron. But he must be getting crazy with my emails. Probably hiding under his bed by now...
if you go to the forum list, you have a control centre where you can set the option to see the messages in threaded view.
Thanks- I did jump out to the main page and log in- there just isn't a link on that page.
I will play with forum list to see what's up. (Let's hope for adjustable fonts as well- my eyes are too old for the new standard one!)
pam
That's what's been bothering me! Thanks!
Hugh, I can't log-in either, but that's kind of blessing. I don't have to read about Prince William.
Aaron while you're tinkering with things. Can we get a link to the home page at the top, or at least one to the Classic poets list, so we can find a poem faster?
Les
Les, I was talking to Prince William, and He said the same thing about You !
Just testing to see if I can post.

Excellent, except I think its slower....but the customer wins this argument
2. Mark All Read appears to be missing.
Its at the bottom. Still trying to figure out how the menu system works. I'll add it somewhere at the top where you lease expect it!
3. Last Page does not give the last page in all
messages, but about 22 pages?
Strange. I tried it on user submitted poetry and I went from page 1 to 9X.
4. Last Post is a great feature.
Yea, we went from version 3.4.X to 5.0.16 so it is expected that all of your fav. menu options moved, things work backwards that used to go side to side, etc. All in the name of progress.
5. New/unread messages are no longer flagged?
It should be flagged. If you are logged into the system it should remember what you have or have not visited now (before, you had to use the same computer over and over again for it to remember). Now, your user profile remembers what you ahve read so you can move from computer to computer (as long as you log in) and it should remember what you haven't read!!!!! It is a neat feature.
6. The forum does not remember my name and e-mail,
as it used to do. I have
to re-enter both name and e-mail each time, I

Very strange. No idea what is wrong. It works for me!
7. For some reason, the announcement of changes
has the thread closed.
That was my fault. Playing around with the announcement feature whereby my post is on all 4 of the discussion boards, no one can reply and I can edit the post with updates as they become known to me. I probably will not use this feature again. I can't see that it doesn't much for me beyond allowing me a PA Speaker system to anoy or alarm people in mass.
8. The list of the 4 available forums no longer
appears at the top, forcing

forum.
Fixed!

I just fixed HTML. It should work again whereas before it did not. Taht said, I am not certain if it is 100% fixed...perhaps a work in progress but I did turn the button from "off" to "on" so that is something.
Best,
Aaron
Aaron, as I told Rudy in our e-mail, I will be on the look our for more glitches, and or possible improvements over the next 2 weeks.
One feature I do like is the Private Messages. It allows people to communicate without the bother of remembering their e-mails.

Here's a message from Brucefur copied from the Friv. Con thread:

Aaron,
I must say, bravo on the changes to the forum; overall I feel that it is much improved, however I have noticed somethings that I think bear scrutiny.
1. Those poets who used special formatting to showcase their poetry: i.e. JH Summers, On the Mountain Top, and Gwydion's Who Cries? are now a complete botch job because it is showing all the codes they used. (nbsp for each space). Does this mean that now the space bar itself will allow for such formatting?
2. I have always hated page clicks. One of the charming things that I loved about Emule was the fact that I wasn't constantly having to click everywhere to get to where I am going. I LIKED being able to just use the scroll bar to go back to find what I was looking for, rather than click, "is this the page? Nope, is THIS the page? etc..." Everything else I see I like. Point two here is my only REAL pet peeve. I should also mention that for people with metacarpal syndrome or arthritis, the less mouse work the better (and we do have an aging population world wide).

Hey, preview works and html tags work - way cool!
I still have to enter my name/e-mail again, but that is probably because I do not log in?
Try logging in, Hugh. It has its advantages. Besides being able to remember you each time you come here, you can edit your posts.

Can someone send me a link, screen shot or other example showing me what click he is performing? I don't know what we are talkinga bout here. I know before I set everything to 100 which is probably large enough to never click 'next'. It may be something simple like changing 30 to 100 on some config option. But honestly from this paragraph I don't know where the next button is coming into play...
Aaron
I think he means this:
friv conv xlvii
(the tagging is a test)
the page has been divided in 4 pages instead of one. This never happened before. The thread just got very very long.
I've gone to a couple of poet anthologies on the USP. The links no longer work. Instead of taking you to their poetry you go to a forum list.

Correct.
Our previous version of "Phorum", our message board application, was so old that any upgrade was going to involve some extensive upgrades. Those upgrades included some incompatible links...sorry about that. No easy way to avoid that issue.

This has been fixed. Everything is set to 100 so when you view a thread, you'll see 100 of those messages. If there are 101 messages, you'll see a link to page 2. I hope that helps. I made uniform changes to all 4 message boards to keep the pattern consistent.
Best,
Aaron
Is everyone else getting the default 'see one's own message' after posting? With the Preview feature, there doesn't seem much point in re-reading what one just wrote. Better to return to the forum top after posting, I mean.

Aaron,
Thank you for addressing my concerns. I also sent you an email that I thought might help you with the site's security issues, but I will repost the link here in case there are others that might be interested.

It is hardware, rather than software (so it doesn't slow your computer as much and hackers and viruses can't bypass or corrupt it), and monitors your port traffic for anomalies, such as Gwydion surfing the Mule while at work hehehe. Sorry Gwyd, forgot to mention that to you! *Sheepish look.

Hello,
I am unable to reply to posts on the USP forum and I have this message at the bottom of my screen:
You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'ORDER BY messageid ASC LIMIT 1' at line 1: DELETE FROM phorumusernewflags WHERE userid=1255 AND forumid=5 ORDER BY messageid ASC LIMIT 1
AND when I read a new post the 'new' stays.
Thank you,
Gwyd

Is views the number of people who've looked at it since the first posting?
Yes! Gwydion, I believe Aaron is keeping track of this thread, so I assume your problem will be worked on soon. In the meantime, have you tried logging out and in again?
Hi Desi,
Yes. I shut the beast down, restarted and then logged on to the mule with the same results as I listed above.
Thank you,
Gwyd

answer of rudy:
"Weird! Looks to me like you found a a bug in phorum. There is no reason for the
"ORDER BY" stuff to be there -- I removed it; now lets see if that fixes the
problem.
Rudy"
Thank you Rudy and Desi, whatever you guys did has fixed the issues.
Have a good one!
