Another reason I think cummings is a crock. (I mean overrated)

Do you think the rest of my favorite poets are overrated?

You know, Talia, after I read all his poems, I felt that he was overated also. But I still hold his experimental urge high on the charts. I think we can take what we can get from people like cummings and Frost without closing our minds to their best poems or shutting them out of our pantheons. That is how I react to rating poets anyway. The rating systen itself is a crock. Just go on reading gus and gals.

To my way of thinking, ee had flashes of brilliance along with many failed experiments. His absolute best one is below. Enchanting rhythm, brilliant tropes and other such wordplay. Plus, it has the ultimate inimitable quality of being 'memorable' - parts of it stick in my mind and float back on occasion:

anyone lived in a pretty how town
(with up so floating many bells down)
spring summer autumn winter
he sang his didn’t he danced his did.

Women and men(both little and small)
cared for anyone not at all
they sowed their isn’t they reaped their same
sun moon stars rain

children guessed(but only a few
and down they forgot as up they grew
autumn winter spring summer)
that noone loved him more by more

when by now and tree by leaf
she laughed his joy she cried his grief
bird by snow and stir by still
anyone’s any was all to her

someones married their everyones
laughed their cryings and did their dance
(sleep wake hoe and then)they
said their nevers and they slept their dream

stars rain sun moon
(and only the snow can begin to explain
how children are apt for forget to remember
with up so floating many bells down)

one day anyone died i guess
(and noone stooped to kiss his face)
busy folk buried them side by side
little by little and was by was

all by all and deep by deep
and more by more they dream their sleep
noone and anyone earth by april
wish by spirit and if by yes.

Women and men(both dong and ding)
summer autumn winter spring
reaped their sowing and went their came
sun moon stars rain

Well said, drpeternsz and I somewhat agree with you, Hugh on that poem. I think Gertrude Stein is the crock of all crocks. I'm still trying to figure out how she got to be a well-known writer. I think Hemingway said it was because she was a rich American in Paris during his time.

She was smart enough to write it
people were stupid enough to fall for it

I agree so whole heartedly with this.

Hugh, what is the title of the poem you posted on June 27 that you believe to be his best?

There is a song currently on the charts that appeals to me and the one line of the song that I particularly like, reminds me of this poem. Now I'll have to see if there is still a lyrics thread and find someone who knows that title as well.

The song is Breathe (2 AM) by Anna Nalick

As I read over the lyrics, I guess they're really no match to e.e.

The verse that starts:

There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out

somehow reminded me of his poem.

Oh well, so what, right? Just thought I'd share because it's what I like to do.

Hugh, what is the title of the poem you posted ... ?

I have never seen it titled other than with the first line, anyone lived etc.

Since eec eschewed caps, it is not surprising he would abandon titles as well.

Some were numbered, I believe:

And perhaps this one's 'title' was tongue-in-cheek?

I'm glad to know that titles weren't everything and/or numbers sufficed. I suppose the numbers might have helped to keep track of how many poems he wrote, like notches on a belt. Actually, no titles....and the numbers point towards someone just writing, without an audience in mind. I wonder if his works were publicized later in life, or after his death....rather than as he wrote them.

To my way of thinking, ee had flashes of brilliance along with many failed experiments

This is a comforting thought. lol.

Marty
