Bill would guarantee visits for grandparents

TORONTO – Grandparents would be guaranteed access to the children of divorce under terms of legislation introduced Wednesday by a Liberal backbencher.

In a private member's bill, Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor proposed changes to the Children's Law Reform Act that would recognize the rights of grandparents to have access to their grandchildren no matter which parent has custody.

"Let me tell you, in many cases the children were used as weapons, first in custody [battles], and then denied access to their grandparents," Craitor said.

"Nobody should have the right to deny children the love they deserve."

Craitor's bill would make it illegal for parents to block access by grandparents to their grandchildren.

New Brunswick, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia currently have laws to protect grandparents' rights.

Oh! I'm sorry. Did you make a new rule that every post has to be a poem?
Maybe I should have just posted this on a friv?
This is a topic that inspires strong feelings in many people and I thought it may prompt a poem or two. If it doesn't, this thread will die soon enough.

I sorry if I sounded rude. That isn't my intention.
I thought it was an interesting topic.
Lot's of heartache over this for some.

well, we tend to stick to poetry, as it is a poetry forum and all, but put as a challenge to write poetry on the subject, well, why not?

Personally, I never even received a birthday card from my grandparents on my fathers side, so I can't be bothered with the subject.

I encourage my parents to love my estranged step-son.
He will always be a part of my family, in my eyes.
I know I should write about it and I do, but I can hardly complete a series of connected thoughts without appearing negative about this subject.
I'll try again though.

too late!

By the way, Johnny, sincere apologies for the sensorship. I didn't realise the whole thread would disappear. Am still new to this! Won't happen again...

Since we've allowed ourselves to talk about something other than poetry on this thread, and since jean-Paul seems interested in the subject, let me say that I think the whole law is a dumb idea. The government should stay out of people's lives and let them raise their own children. And leave it to Canada to be the first to create such a law.

I reject any political view on the subject.
I am merely interested in voicing how distressed I am over the social and psychological impact that results from separating a child from his/ her grandparents, intentional or otherwise.
The is a very real lack of natural affection in today's society.
I, for one, value the parental experience that a grandparent can display.

Thanks Desi

My concern was that she is a real person, and had indeed responded on User Submitted to at least one poem

As absurd as her postings are, I don't feel they should be banned unless there is cursing or abuse

I do not remove real responses, because where would I end? No forum left :-)

But I don't want to leave anything paranoia here. There is enough of that around. And surely not when it aims directly at for example russia. I don't want to frighten off russian poetry lovers.

What do the rest of you think?

Desi, yes, I will support your decision, falling as it would under the category of derogatory remarks based on ethnic origin.

Can I still call my Canadian friends a bunch of Puck-Slapping Maple Syrup Swillers? smiling smiley

I do not envy your position.
