Which is smarter?

Which is smarter as a whole, dogs or cats?

They both show signs of intelligence, but in different ways.

NEW poem anyone?

"I "Love Summer more than I hate Winter"

I read a joke on cats and dogs once but don't know the exact wording. Here is the jist -

Dog: Is looked after by humans, pampered and everything, and thinks to himself - they must be God!

Cat: Is looked after by humans, pampered and everything, and thinks to herself - I am God!

Who's smarter? I'd say the dog. The cat can only go down from where she is but the dog gives himself something to strive for. Hehehe! I'm just kidding. winking smiley

Jean-Paul, here's a very uninformed opinion. I think that neither whales nor cats will come to you when you call them, which to me means that they're probably less intelligent than the canines.

I did see a guy on the Ed Sullivan show once who had trained cats.

A poem?

dogs and cats are whales of fun
while whales and cats bark up the wrong tree
but dogs and whales can't purr in ecstacy

Dogs come when you call, cats take a message and get back to you later. :-)

And rabbits? My Flaubertine is as smart in her rabbit way as anybody. And timorously valiant to boot. Also, I expect they'll be here after we're gone, skipping and nibbling and twitching their noses. Dogs!

My cats come when I call them...when they feel like it.

Cats and dogs are like men and women...one is emotionally superior. so are you talking IQ or EQ?

I wouldn't venture on which is 'smarter.' Dogs are certainly more trainable, but there are differences within the species. Your average Golden Retriever or Border Collie will do whatever you ask, whereas an Afghan Hound or Chow is likely to consider their own interests first, much as cats do.

Personally, my cats all know their names and are generally responsive to them. They also like affection, and will usually be in the same room that I am, even if they're not demanding to be petted. I do have one who is not interested in human contact (as opposed to being feral), but she was abused before I got her. We co-exist quite well.

A cat is more intelligent than people believe, and can be taught any crime.
- Notebook, 1895

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.
- Notebook, 1894

‘I am the Cat who walks by himself, and all places are alike to me.'
