The Lake

Last night I went to a concert in the Sydney Opera House and for the first time I heard 'Antony' (from 'Antony and the Johnsons'), and i was absolutely bowled over by his voice - powerful, soulful, beautiful - it's difficult to describe. Apparently he's done a very haunting version of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Lake", and I wondered if anyone here has heard it? (it's not available here)

- a bit of info about him:

THE LAKE

In youth's spring, it was my lot
To haunt of the wide earth a spot
The which I could not love the less;
So lovely was the loneliness
Of a wild lake, with black rock bound.
And the tall pines that tower'd around.
But when the night had thrown her pall
Upon that spot — as upon all,
And the wind would pass me by
In its stilly melody,
My infant spirit would awake
To the terror of the lone lake.
Yet that terror was not fright —
But a tremulous delight,
And a feeling undefin'd,
Springing from a darken'd mind.
Death was in that poison'd wave
And in its gulf a fitting grave
For him who thence could solace bring
To his dark imagining;
Whose wild'ring thought could even make
An Eden of that dim lake.

Hugh, if you love great music and you ever get a chance to hear him sing, live, then i highly recommend it. I think he's based in New York (?) He'll send shivers up and down your spine. (and he's quite spectacular to look at too)

r.

For anyone who wants to hear Antony sing Poe's poem, accompanied by a lovely animated movie clip, here's the link - just click on "The Lake" -
