really, when does it start? I havent heard anyone say Twenty Oh Five or Four etc.

Twenty Ten perhaps?

I remember reading in a history book that the Anglo Saxons, who followed an older style of Roman numerals were particularly happy, after the year 999, to write M instead of DCCCCLXXXXVIIIJ, that they wrote in the previous period. I am not clear what the use of the 'J' was. How they did addition, subtraction, and multiplication is equally unclear.

They did all right with dividing and conquering though !
