Great Johnny, now I can look up the lyrics to Blues for Allah without having to google all over the place.

Speaking of the dead, I'm starting to muse about Halloween poems. I'm thinking no one yet has done anything with 'lycanthropy' (for a lim) or 'lycanthrope' for a double d.
Maybe lycanthrope - chickenthrope for a cowardly werewolf dd, or lycanthropy, misanthropy, philanthropy for the 1,2,5 lines of the limerick.
What else? Suggestions appreciated, and I've got some 10 days before the, erm, deadline for a change.
These are as close as I could come, Hugh:

By the way, what are the origins of all this halloween stuff. It seems to have crept up on me over the last twenty years. Before that we only had Guy Fawkes.
It's another American import. Could be worse, we could have sent you more fast food chains.

By the way, what are the origins of all this halloween stuff.
It was originally a religious holiday, all Souls' Day, the eve of All Saints Day 11/1
The name Halloween comes from the abbreviation of All Hallow's Evening. Of course we Americans have commercialized the giving of alms to the poor and collecting for the needy into candy gathering by children and their parents and dressing like "ghosts" and goblins.

Characters in MEASURE FOR MEASURE refer to the dates thus:
POMPEY Sir, but you shall come to it, by your honour's
leave. And, I beseech you, look into Master Froth
here, sir; a man of four-score pound a year; whose
father died at Hallowmas: was't not at Hallowmas,
Master Froth?
FROTH All-hallond eve.
=======================
Where and when my grandfather was a boy (Marshfield, Wisconsin, in just after the turn of the 20th century), GOOD children stayed home on Halloween and only BAD children went out and committed vandalisms and made nuisances of themselves.
It's the annotations I really found intriguing
Which leads us, gleefully, to:
"Summer is y-comen in,
Loude sing, cuckoo!
Groweth seed and bloweth meed
And spring'th the woode now--
Sing cuckoo!
Ewe bleateth after lamb,
Low'th after calfe cow;
Bullock starteth, bucke farteth.
Merry sing, cuckoo!
Cuckoo, Cuckoo!
Well sing'st thou, cuckoo:
Ne swike thou never now!
Sing cuckoo, now! Sing, cuckoo!
All Souls is the day after All Saints (Hallowmas). So how do we get from the first mass of all the saints (who don't have a separate day of their own) to witches and goblins? Our local churches are trying to reclaim the evening for the saints and light.
In Mexico, and parts of the US Southwest, La Dia de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead is celebrated. The souls are the spirits of the dead, and are therefore ghosts. (Candy skulls, yum!)

Linda, read the Wikipedia account of trick or treating at this website:

All Souls is the day after All Saints (Hallowmas)
Sorry about that Linda, I got ahead of myself there I guess. Typical of me.

growing hair on my arms legs and brainy

Ah, another thread successfully hijacked - how satisfying!
Turns out the pronunciation is LIEkenthrope, not LICKenthrope, bad news for the cowardly dactyl. Rhymes for lycanthrope seem to be lacking, unless something like bikin' is used. Unattractive doncha know. Especially disappointing since pusillanimity is waiting anxiously right there to be line six, sigh.
So, a limerick it must be. What about lines 3 & 4, though? Loup-garou (or even the plural loups-garous, with the same pronunciation) is tempting, since the accent can be on the last syllable, but suffers from the same malady as lycanthropy - readers may very well be unfamiliar with the term.
Perhaps the middle lines could refer to famous werewolves or werewolf movies- he takes people to Werewolf of London to show his philanthropy?

The obligatory Warren Zevon lyrics:
I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Werewolves of London
If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Werewolves of London
He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London
Draw blood

What a long , strange trip it's been, brother turtle.
Even a man who is pure at heart
And says his prayers by night
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the autumn moon is bright.
NOT Maria Ouspenskaya !
By the way, I can highly recommend Poul Anderson's novel, Operation Chaos. It starts off with a werewolf in the army, who in his civilian plays Rin Tin Tin and Silver Chief in the movies.
pam
The sequel Operation Luna is also good.
Thanks for the link. I come from the part of England that lost Halloween completely and only bothered with Guy Fawkes. Our demand was not "trick or treat" but "penny for the guy"
Not all who wander are lost, Brother Hare
Here you go Hugh, more Dead:
Dire Wolf
© Grateful Dead
In the timbers of Fennario
the wolves are running round
The winter was so hard and cold
froze ten feet neath the ground
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
I sat down to my supper
T'was a bottle of red whiskey
I said my prayers and went to bed
That's the last they saw of me
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
When I awoke, the Dire Wolf
Six hundred pounds of sin
Was grinnin at my window
All I said was "come on in"
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
The wolf came in, I got my cards
We sat down for a game
I cut my deck to the Queen of Spades
but the cards were all the same
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me
In the backwash of Fennario
The black and bloody mire
The Dire Wolf collects his due
while the boys sing round the fire
Don't murder me
I beg of you don't murder me
Please
don't murder me

Holy Garcia, Batman !
well, this will keep me bizzy for a while while while !
I've had some Cherry Garcia ice cream from Ben & Jerry's - does that qualify me as a fan? I had to give it up after one pint, though, having read on the label that there are 17 grams of fat in each spoonful.
Returning to my interest in following this thread, however, it occurs to me that 'anthony" might very well be an acceptable rhyme for lycanthropy. True or false?
Hugh, acceptable by whose standards? Certainly not your own?
Anthony, and lycanthropy---
Sounds to me like trying to match honey and poppy, but if you say so.
Les
It's FINE with me, people can rhyme whatever the hell they want, but Hugh questions performance/chance and morning/agreeing, and then proposes ANTHONY ? Good Gosh !
Humph.
