I am trying to find a/some sewing patterns of the type of dresses that Cora-Beth from The Waltons wore. I have had no luck...anyone want to help me?

Here's a link- [fashion-megasite.com].
You might also try Sears Roebuck catalogues of the era- and since it was the Depression, go back a few years. I don't think that anyone on Walton's Mountain was up-to-date fashionably.

Talia, search this site for the 1920's, 30's, and 40's styles and you will probably find something appropriate.

Talia, to post a hyperlink put a couple of these pointy things around your link:

like this < [www.pastpatterns.com] >

Just leave out the spaces and you will get a hyperlink. By the way, my seven sisters can attest to the fact that I am not a girl. ;)

woops. Sorry. I always thought Les was short for Lesly, but I guess it could be Lester. So, so sorry.

It is Leslie, but I'm still a guy. And for all the Pats, Chrises and Jos out there, I feel your pain.

My mom used to sew and always used Simplicity patterns by the way.

Stacy, Tracy, go along with the Pats and Jo's too, but honelstly I had never heard of Leslie. Anyhow, thank you for helping me with this. I am attending a writer's conference in St. Louis in October and needed something "traditionally smart" to get those publishers to remember me...think it will work?

It might, but your words will make the greatest impression.

Certainly not Leslie Caron, or Lesley Anne Warren!

Talia,

What kind of conference? Are you presenting on something from the 30's era? (Last time I went to an English Honor Society conference, the most popular presentation was on Ferris Bueller. )

Your words will make
the greatest impression
even if you dress up
like the Great Depression

I have always preferred the modest style worn by ladies in times past...nowadays you can't even find a blouse that doesn't plunge too far down at Wal-Mart! The Conference is being held by Word Aflame Publications, which happens to be associated with the United Pentecostal Church Internatinal, of which I am a member. They will be holding workshops on everything from how to write, how to get published, etc. and I believe some spiritual matters will be included.

By the way, was watching the Walton's this morning and I realized that Erin's boyfriend's name was "Ashley".

my wife's grandparents and some of their children moved from Brooklyn NY to Earlysville VA in the 60s, which is exactly the area of where The Waltons took place.

If the show continued in real time, what year would it be set in now? My guess is 1970?

Happy Days would be....1980?

Johnny,

The 70's were just depressing- not the same as the Depression. On the other hand, Happy Days in the 80's could be funny- imagine the Fonz in one of those Miami Vice white suits!

But Leslie is a man's name, I was always taught that women spell it Lesley.

And I was always taught that the male form of Marian is Marion, but most women with my name, round here (Yorkshire) are spelt Marion, and John Wayne's original middle name was Marian. You can't rely on any rules for name-spelling.

Thanks, Toi...that is one interesting website. I'm emailing it to the most eccentric housewife I know.
