Why does the entire system slow down around 10 pm 7am european time? It has lead to many double posts lately, in the last week or so, especially on the USP.

I'm guessing you mean Greenwich Mean Time, since Europe has several time zones. It's always slow for me, since I am a dinosaur and only have a 56K dial-up account (and I only usually get 48k instead of the 56k the modem can stand), but I have found a solution to the double post problem: highlight your entire post and ctrl+c (copy) it to the clipboard before hitting the Post button. That way, if the system hangs, one needs merely to ctrl+v (paste) it back in and Post it again. Keeps one from muttering (or screaming) about internet failures in general as well.

Which, strangely enough, I actually had to do with this one!

Hugh, I'm not talking about the slow response time that is caused by the computer, or the connection. Between 10 pm and 1 am pacific time, which is morning in places like Kent, you literally cannot log-in for 5 or 10 minutes.

I'm no computer wizard, but my guess is that there is decreased bandwith for the site at that time. Perhaps Rudy or Aaron could explain this phenomenon.
It's not just once in a while, but every night this happens.

Maybe it's your ISP, Les. Haven't noticed any unusual delays logging in around that time. My technology level is much the same as Hugh described.

Can't be that, Ian, because as you've probably noticed I jump all over the internet and all the websites work fine for me, but this one. Also, as I stated above, several other posters, including JP, Peter, Jean Paul, KQ and others have had double posts during the time period I mentioned.

I've noticed this. It's two o'clock in the afternoon here in Kent, England, and emule skips about like a two year old. But when I log on in the morning at seven o'clock, it will stagger slowly around like a sad old man witth a hangover. Hang on, sounds like me. And les.

Me and e-mule both used to suffer from this, but now e-mule is fine at any time. Must be the Sanatogen I spilled on the keyboard!

It could be one of my non-literary related projects. I recently adjusted one of the other projects to include fewer dynamic 'modules'. The result was less demand on the server but at the same time more people began to visit....

So we kinda ended back where we were -- just with more visitors :)

The server is nearing the end of its useful life as we find our other non-poetry projects are growing as fast if not faster. And the server hasn't grown along with demand!

Thanks for responding Aaron. I was beginning to think that there was some sort of Twilight Zone effect that only I was experienceing. I appreciate the feedback.

Did you guys ever set up a nice membership option, where the members can log in and get nice extra options like having your name in green or so?

Not that I am jealous of the persons here that get there name in big big letters... ;-)

Desi, Rudy is in charge of the membership options for the poetry project. That said, he is on vacation in Florida. He quit his job in New York so he could be a bum and live off his earnings for a while and return to the university lifestyle he left behind. So, to answer your question, it should happen soon as he has free time on his hands now.

Hugh, we talked about switching drives. I believe Rudy even purchased a drive. Then Rudy got lazy and felt we could get buy with the one we had for a while until he had 'more free time'. So we are still in the waiting pattern. We could, at any moment, crash and burn. I suppose that is his way of living on the edge.
