I was erring on the side of caution. Starbucks coffee houses are numerous here in California over 1450 in the state, but only 25 in all of Canada.

My sister was amazed that she couldn't get iced tea in the UK- not even at Starbucks there!
You can get iced tea here in Ireland, and there are ads for it on UK television channels, so you can get it there now.
Probably because she ran all over London demanding it last November!

My point with the ad was that we Americans tend to assume that every where in the world is pretty much the same as here. Which of course is not the case.
With the Starbucks, they're like McDonalds. They're seemingly everywhere. There are 4 Starbucks within the city of Turlock, population 65,000, and 10 within 20 minutes of where I live.
Pam, I'm proud to say I've never stepped foot in any of them.

What do you mean by chinzy? I have to buy my coffee at McDonald's too. Who can afford Startbucks? Maybe that's why there are so many in the US.
We have loads of good coffee places here. Trust me, I'm an addict. Mmmmm, Butler's hazelnut mocha...

Les, oh man, you need to come on over and visit us; I live in Vancouver, Beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I work in the center of the downtown core, there are (and for once I am not exaggerating) literally 5 Starbucks in a 3 block radius...and I'm sad to say I worked as a barista at a Starbucks...Seattle is a hop skip and a jump from Vancouver.
Blenz are THE Canadian coffee houses, mind you we are also partial to our Tim Horton's coffee and donuts shops too.

Not including North Vancouver there are 60 Starbucks in Vancouver, even I'm surprised at the high number.
And hey, BC has more Starbucks compared to Ontario, now that's a wow! Oh wait, probably cuz the East really, and I mean really like their Tim Hortons. Have to admit, a cuppa timi's is like drinking liquid gold...mmm, time for coffee!

Here's a Naiku (not really a haiku, just a short short poem) that I wrote about my neighborhood in Seattle (where I lived from 1985 to 1996). Broadway is the main drag in a neighborhood a little bit like Brooklyn Heights:
new Thai restaurant
on Broadway
serves espresso
And here's one for Starbucks. Don't get me wrong -- I actually like Starbucks coffee, and its chairs and decor, and oatmeal cookies (which are often available if you ask, even when they're not on display), and their employment practices and their corporate politics. This is just a comment on their omnipresence:

I discovered a truth quite insightful,
Starbucks', I must say,
Has by far and away,
A taste that's decidedly frightful.
My dad used to pour ground coffee beans directly into the bottom of an old blue and white enamel pot. He never measured the amount: "I just eyeball it," he used to say. He then filled the pot with tap water, brought the concoction to boil, and poured the first cup through a wire strainer. Best damned coffee I ever drank!

Joe, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one here who will risk a limerick within the shadow of Hugh's impeccable presence. I think our dads used the same measuring cup. My pop used to say, "Hey that's close enough" to practically everything he measured in the kitchen and out. Miraculously, it usually was close enough. I walked away wondering to myself, "How does he do that?"
50 years later. I still don't know.

Les, measuring that way is a talent. You either have it or you use a measuring cup.
The trick is that for most things in cooking- close enough is fine.
