Father's Day..you all knew this was coming.

My husband...who doesn't really care much for poetry, seems to think we need to find a poem to read on Father's Day at church. And being tha he's not really into poetry, the lighter and the sompler the better. He's not good at "reading" poetry either. Many difficult things we need to work on, but nevertheless, he suggested I ask you folks if you knew of anything that would be approrpriate to read in church on Father's Day...something on the positive side, religious references as God being the father to the fatherless ok, or something that might honor our Pastor as being a father to our church.

Any suggestions?

I had a good one, but it's so inappropriate for church.

It's by Groucho Marx, it was a little song he performed

Today
Father is Father's Day
and we
are giving you
a tie

It's not much we know
It's just our way of showing you
we think you're a regular guy

Because according to our mother you're our father
and thats good enough
for us

Talia, you might find something here:
[homepages.rootsweb.com] />
it includes this one which pops up on lots of different sites -

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it ... Dad

Maybe one of the old traditional hymns, read without music, would fit the bill.

Like 'Here before thee, aweful Father' ? I knew a vicar once who wanted it sung at his daughter's wedding, where he was officiating!
