If the poem does describe "a purely imaginary incident," then I'm glad he chose to give it such a happy title.

He didn't call it HOW THEY BROUGHT THE BAD NEWS...

or HOW THE BROUGHT THE BLACK DEATH...

For bad news, they wouldn't have needed to ride so fast. I always thought it was news of a battle, myself.
