i need to choose one of these poets to study in detail
which do you think i should chose ???

thanx for the help
ces
which do you think i should chose ???
Yeats. Reason - he is the most difficult of the three.
Signature approach? Slippery term, but he has the most to say, along with having found fascinating ways to communicate his ideas.
which to you think i should chose???
I, too, am leery of the term "signature approach". If it involves style, then Dickinson's careful choice of words and her brevity are worth the study. Her letters are worth reading also. It's a personal choice, so go for the one that appeals to YOU.
Since there's a vote for Yeats and a vote for Dickinson, I'll step forward for Wordsworth. I memorized this sonnet when I was a teenager and I like it more every time I think about it.
The World Is To Much With Us...
by William Wordsworth
The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune,
It moves us not.--Great God! I'd rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn.
=============
Ces, this is no help to you, I'm sure.
Why don't you choose (at random, from this archive) one poem by each of the three. Read them, put them aside, and then ask yourself 24 hours later which of the three you'd most like to read again--and go with that one.
yes i suppose i mean their styles but its not fully what im looking for i cant describe what i need
marian this is what ive narrowed it down to from nine
i like them all....this is why i turned to ye for help
assignment has to be in in three weeks so im really stuck
Okay, then:
Sit down and write a paragraph about the "signature approach" of each one of the Fab Three. Pick the one that's least painful to write.
AND IF THAT DOESN'T WORK, toss a three-sided coin.
I always thought Wordsworth was a pretentious name.....did he feel somehow OBLIGATED to write ?
My friend Joe Miller hasn't yet had the urge to grind any flour !
Go with Yeats !
Dickinson will bring you down if taken in large doses
Dickinson could be dealt with more easily in a paper of this sort than others because her signature style is easily recognizable to most readers. The biggest headache with ED would be choosing illustrative samples. She wrote so many poems that it would take weeks to read them all to find the perfect examples.
Les
p.s. Marian, my name is and always has been Les. I have never signed a post using any other name. But due to the wonders of science and technology and my ignorance of same, this site and Bill Gates's dream software won't let me change my status to "Logged In" without also changing
my log in LOGO. Hence, I use lg, my initials, instead of -Les- because that's the way THEY want it. If it was up to me there would be no, Log ins. It's a ploy to get advertising revenue.

I vote for Dickinson. I like her best among the 3.
Dickinson seems to be winning, and I agree with LG (aka Les) that her "signature style" is more discuss-able than the others.
Ces, have you learned from this that there is no such thing as a "quick question" about poetry?
(My signature style is illegible. That's why I write poetry in my printing style.)
I do cryptoquote in ink, but write poetry in pencil
and in retrospect....my mother-in-law watches the Lifetime channel CONSTANTLY, yet she remains a happy cheerful person.......so go for Dickinson !
And in the final stretch, it's Dickenson, it's Yeats, it's Dickenson by a length and the crowd is loving it!
Now, shall we decide what to name CES's children?
Equestrian Dickenson
reins in the Yeats
and poor billy wordsworth
is still at the gates
(can you say dickenson by a length?)
as usual, I am no help at all
i would love ye to name my children..... now theres a daily do for ya marian
thanx loads for the help but the task now is names....he he he
Abraham, Martin, and John
pam
Or, if you want to name them for CES's favorite poems:
William, William, and Emily
To avoid confusion, he can call Wm #1 "Butler" and Wm #2 "William."
What's wrong with calling him "Jeeves" ?
Dulcet, Couplet, and Cacaphony
You be Cacophony.
I think I already am cacaphony !
Full of sound and fury....well...full of something anyway
a self-defecating sense of humor?
Full of the dickens?
(Emily's Father-in-law)
I once knew a woman who named her daughters KARA, NINA, and ANNA.
(I am not making this up.)
Gee, I thought i had a good story because I knew three sisters April, Mae, and June !
Did Kara have a brother named Mazov?
In school we used to put "Warren Pease" on the attendance sheet when we had a substitute teacher, as well as more rude ones such as Holden McGroin

his life is so impelling, from walking pennyless the streets of london
hospitable friends who shared their food.. the depth and feelings
in his works ... sum it up with his quote "Sentimentality," he said,
is deceiving one's self;
rhetoric is deceiving other people."
his life is so impelling ...
Impelling?

Yeats walked pennyless the streets of London, sharing the food of hospitable friends?
PRO-pelling....it's what happened after eating that food and doing the Trafalgar Two-Step
If I can not be at the celebration in Philadelphia can I send a tape of me reciting my poem?
YEATS!!!
