Funny, I don't like the poem THAT MUCH, but it keeps coming up in response to all sorts of questions, and I'm sometimes the one who brings it up!
You could read it as being about STARTING OVER, because it was written by a man whose physical health had been shattered. When people lose what they have thought of as their SELVES (their bodies, possessions, belief systems...), it's a kind of STARTING OVER to figure out what YOU are, if you're not what you thought you were before.
