poem about writing

I heard a girl recite a poem that was echoed "if your going to be a writer...." or maybe it was, "if your going to write..." Does anyone know the one I'm talking about?

No luck finding it, but I did come upon these terrific quotations:

"Writing is easy. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and open a vein."
--often attributed to Hemingway, but actually by Red Smith

Related quotation, attributed to Gene Fowler: "Writing is easy: all you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until the drops of blood form on your forehead."

Could it be Poeta Fit, Non Nascitur by Lewis Carrol

It starts

How shall I be a poet?
How shall I write in rhyme:
You told me once ' the very wish
Partook of the sublime.'
Then tell me how! Don't put me off
With your "another time"!'

And there are 17 more verses! It's satirical.

My favourite Hemingway quote is "write hard about what hurts" - i keep it on my desk.
No pain, no gain.

No, but that's a good one anyhow. It repeated over and over "if your going to be a writer" or maybe it was "if your going to write."

'A Familiar Letter' by Oliver Wendell Holmes (see the Classical Poets) is a poem addressed to an aspiring writer, though it doesn't contain the exact words you have quoted.

I think this might be the poem you are looking for:

so you want to be a writer

by Bukowski.
