If someone wanted to try and get their poetry published, where would they go, and how would they go about it? Thanks.
Poetry.com has awarded publishing contracts through the International Library Of Poetry. You can post your work there and it will automatically be copyrighted. They will look over your work and let you know if they wish to publish it. They will usually let you know within about six weeks. And they have several poetry contests as well. Aside from that, your guess is as good as mine . Hope it's helpful Ben.

Did the turnip truck just pass by?
turnip truck...stop it, you're killing me. yeah, poetry.com will publish you in their 700 page anthology, and if you want to see your poem in print you can buy the book for $55.00 plus shipping. or, they will also put your poem in a nice frame and send it back to you for a tidy little fee. then you'll get a notice in the mail that your poem was selected as the "poem of the year" and that it will be read at the next poet convention either in vegas, d.c., or on a cruise ship. you can go for a few hunded dollars or more and hear it read by some great hollywood celebrity like jamie farr. you also get a free subscription to "turnip truck monthly" for your troubles.
instead, you may want to go to a book store and get a copy of "poet's markrtplace" or similar book. they will list all the magazines that you can send your poems to for consideration.

Ben, the question has been asked before. We have had individuals with published poetry on the forum before. Perhaps they might step forward now and give you a few words of advice. But until they do you might try this site from Hugh's list of references on the "Reference Guide" right here at e-mule.

Gentlemen, you will have to excuse my "apparent lack of intelligence" here.
I've been writing for a long time, but relatively new to the rest of it's dementions. Simply trying to be helpful. Glad however to see that I'm not the only opinionated person here.

Yeah, well here's my two cents. (Recycled: the same two cents I put in every time.)
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR WORK PUBLISHED IN MAGAZINES AND THEN IN ANTHOLOGIES AND GET PAID FOR IT, good luck to you. Keep submitting and see what happens. Think about enrolling in a university creative writing program where you will be nurtured and published in the school rag and advised.
IF YOU WANT TO PUBLISH YOUR OWN POEMS IN ORDER TO SHARE THEM WITH FRIENDS, fair play to you. Do it yourself, distribute it yourself, autorgraph every copy and get the satisfaction of a giver of gifts.
IF YOU WANT YOUR POETRY TO BE WIDELY READ, don't think in terms of conventional "poetry publishing" at all. Think of places where people will see your work. If you've written a poem about adopting a puppy, offer it to an animal adoption organization for their newsletter or website. If you've written a poem in praise of the stately elk, offer it to the Sierra Club for one of their calendars or greeting cards. If you've written a poem about the world's hungry children, offer it to UNICEF. And keep a really nice scrapbook of all your published work: the websites, the cards, the newsletters.
Thanks for all the opinions on what I should do. I am going to view through all the links you guys gave me and then make a decision on that.
Ben, I recently ran across this website. I think the author speaks from experience:
