Give me you're personal opinion about this Poe's poem, I need it for my literature class. Thanks.
Sonnet - Silence
by Edgar Allan Poe
There are some qualities- some incorporate things,
That have a double life, which thus is made
A type of that twin entity which springs
From matter and light, evinced in solid and shade.
There is a two-fold Silence- sea and shore-
Body and soul. One dwells in lonely places,
Newly with grass o'ergrown; some solemn graces,
Some human memories and tearful lore,
Render him terrorless: his name's "No More."
He is the corporate Silence: dread him not!
No power hath he of evil in himself;
But should some urgent fate (untimely lot!)
Bring thee to meet his shadow (nameless elf,
That haunteth the lone regions where hath trod
No foot of man,) commend thyself to God!
Give me you're personal opinion about this Poe's poem ...
Poe couldn't count to 14?
He says: There is DUALITY in the universe, but it is NOT a good-vs-bad duality. It's a yin-yang kind of thing. The "other" side is nothing to fear. It is NOT a God-vs-Devil thing. Both sides are God.
No, can't be that.
There is a two-fold Silence- sea and shore-
Body and soul.
One (silence) is no problem, the other much to be dreaded. But is the contrast between sea and body/shore and soul, or sea and shore vs body and soul?
two life's... An after life?
A bit late for the literature class, but surely it's just solitude versus loneliness and thereby all an attitude of mind.
Found a nice Freud quote of minor relevance to this - Neurosis is the inability to tolerate ambiguity.
nice Freud quote
"If you don't like me, blame my parents." (not really)
